Missing exhaust vents from roofs and walls happens with Mattamy homes and with some other large builders. This happens because of poor supervision. When the people installing the siding (or bricks) they can accidently cover the exhaust duct for the vent. This may be because the house wrap hides the vents while the work is being done.

When the exhaust ducts are covered on roofs with shingles I have always assumed that it was deliberate negligence likely done because the negligent roofer(s) did not have a vent with them.

The problem now for the OP is that the range hood exhaust has been venting into voids in the structure or into the possibly causing rot and mold that is now hidden in the structure.

I recall a one year inspection at a Mattamy home with a missing roof exhaust vent where there was so much moisture in the attic that it was literally raining in there.

I inspect many new homes but many people assume their new home is fine and that some magical person inspected their home. The reality is that when someone takes possession of their new home it is their responsibility to look for issues that are often well beyond the ability of home owners.

Not only are there missing vents at new homes there are also venting clearance issues that violate gas codes and building codes.

If the OP bought the home resale then a competent inspector should have identified this issue.

A repeat customer wanted to buy a 3 to 4 year old Mattamy built home in Cambridge.

It had been rented and it appeared to have 4 adult tenants. Both bathroom exhaust vents were missing from the roof because 1) the roofer(s) covered the vent ducts with shingles, and 2) because no one checked. This has happened hundreds of times and it is likely just because the roofer(s) do not have vents with them.

This home also was very short on attic insulation.

The attic was so full of moisture that the attic structure did what is called "truss uplift" thus causing quite a few cracks on the second floor ceilings and side exterior walls.

What a ________ mess that was.
