just recently moved in and wondered if Milton water is good to drink. Obviously, I will have it filtered by a Brita filter, but other than that, it will be straight from the tap. As well, if I have my ice maker installed in the refrigerator, this water will be straight from the pipes. How good can this be?

Thoughts?

We always drink bottled water but use tap water for our ice and have no problem. You're more than safe drinking tap water though, in my personal opinion, it's not Mexico.

I'm not sure I understand the basis of the question.

Is the water safe to drink?

It has to be. Your Region is required to provide clean drinking water by law.

As for the taste and smell, that's a different question.

Being back in Milton, i'm gonna miss "old milton" water.

Although, it's not the same since they started putting chlorine in it. Damn, it used to be like getting bottled water from your tap!

Those pesky health inspectors, always making sure you water isn't filled with e. coli.

Seriously though as most bottled water, that is not imported, comes from municipal sources, you basically pay for them to put it through an industrial sized Brita, instead of the one in your fridge. Then you pay more per L for it, then you do for gas.

I remember watch on the news a couple of weeks ago that numerous municipalities were tested for lead levels in their water...I was wondering if Milton was involved in this...how did Milton score?

Milton scored very well as there is very few homes built before 1950 when lead was commonly used. In Halton region only a few homes in the old sections of Burlington were found to have them mostly the ones that have not been upgraded along lakeshore road. Part of the problem is people who had plumbing work done by themselves using lead sauder for joints in piping that is not up to the plumbing code.

I am really interested in water filtration systems too. I am wondering can you tell us the name of the one you are using/ where to obtain? Is it a Reverse Osmosis system?

Something no one has mentioned on here about our Lake Ontario water (and is conveniently never mentioned in the media reports i.e. David Miller saying Lake Ont. water is purer than Perrier) is the fact that our Lake Ontario drinking water contains trace amounts of hundreds of pharmaceutical medications that goes into the sewer system from our waste and then back into the lake, where we draw our water from. Basically we are drinking recycled water from our tap!! Studies have shown these are not filtered out by traditional municipal water filtration methods, and our Government and American researchers are only now just starting to seriously look into this, re potential health issues. They are called PPCPs (pharmaceutical and personal care products). You will find more by Google. Type in Women and Health Protection, go to their website and under Pharmaceuticals scroll down for water article. Anyhow, I first read about these in a Globe&Mail article several years back. The media rarely talks about them lately. All I see is articles promoting that tap water is better than bottled water. Personally I think true underground spring water bottled in glass (vs. plastic) is likely better, but is hard to find (try Whole Foods in Oakville off Trafalgar Rd). We need Canadian sources of it, but we are behind here and still bottling in plastic (a whole other issue). Of course this is very expensive and not a practical option for most of us.

I have also researched purification methods too, and from what I read on the US Environment Protection website is that Reverse Osmosis is the best filtration system to filter out PPCPs and all the other unpleasant things found in water that do not get filtered out municipally ( some mentioned above). Speaking of, does anyone have one? How expensive? Any brands recommended? We are thinking of investing in such a system.
