We're Canadian and proud of it! Our families (great grandparents and further back) have been here for so many generations, it's hard to even track back when they first came over from Europe (Ireland/Britain/Germany). At some point, the first Canadians came from another country since we're not a very old country, but our family has been here for over 100 years. Laurie |

I'm a born and raised Canadian, although, my gradparents were the first to come here probably in the late 1940s, early 50s from Holland. When I grew up in Milton before, it was very much a mainly "white" community. I could probably count on one hand how many races were in my class at school. That being said, I wouldn't want to live in Milton if it was still like that. It's so cool to learn about different backgrounds and cultures. That is why I would never move to Georgetown either, cuz you here so many stories of them physically intimidating people of different races out of town!!! What the hell is that about?!?! Sad that we still have such close-minded people out there. |

Musicfreak, That sort of intimidation was also attempted (maybe not physical yet) in a post called "Indians in Milton". All someone was trying to do was to arrage few get togethers to enjoy food and festivals and met with soo many negative comments about how to create something based on country, culture, blah, blah. And yet some thing was attempted by our Polish friends and no one said a word about their post. What would you say about that? Double standards because Polish people fit in well with Canadian culture and Indian culture doesnt? Check out the link below if you wish to read... http://www.hawthornevillager.com/phpbb/ ... ht=indians |

Sad that we still have such close-minded people out there. Well, it is not so easy to get house in Georgetown even if someone want to. Prices are higher compare to, for example, Brampton. May be because average house income in Goergetown is above average too. Our company office is close to Georgetown. Never get into "many stories of them physically intimidating people of different races out of town". I believe if something like this will ever happen it will be covered by news. The only story related to this I know is about last winter with some kids at school making some comments. It was covered by local newspaper and, I belive, some people left on the city streets to marsh against of this racism altitude. How about first Canadian immigrant I ever know, his son was at school east from Toronto. They call him Casper, because his skin was too white compare to majority of the students at this school. Or how about this story http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2005/11/ ... 51114.html She was an eastern Europe girl at the school near by Jane and Finch area. Why people in the Georgetown so terribly wrong if they want to live in the relatively small community compare to exactly the same in Brampton and Markham. Perhaps, they still would like to say clear and loud - Merry X-Mass - instead of happy holedays. |

Reena, What would I say about that? (Double standards) I saw both the Polish and Indian threads. Read through a bit of each of them. Also read the posts in the Polish thread where some were offended by the double standard. As for my opinion, I personally wouldn't start a thread based on race no matter what race I was, but that's just me. It didn't offend me personally. Also, since I lived in Milton before, and know alot who still live there, i'm not saying that Milton is without racism. Alot of the old Miltonians HATE New Milton in general. BUT, of all the people I have talked to from the Escarpment, and seen from our Meet the Neighbours thing, I see we're going to have many different cultures living together. This IS a good thing. (kf095) As for the Georgetown comments, you don't necessarily hear everything on the news. lol We should know that based on the what we see about the War on the U.S. feeds. Sometimes the truth can really be a downer. |

I assume you are the social worker. At this case you will know alot of old people in old Milton and how lots of them do hate new Milton. I know about multiculturalism. I'm from country which has about hundred of different cultures. In general it is good. I agree. As long as one culture is not replaced by another. Was it good for first Canadian nations after European come here? I'm not sure. |

As being a born Canadian who lived abroad for a long period of time and travelled a lot, we (Canadians) are respected in the world as tolerant and open minded people. People who are "nice" and respectful to one another and a place where multiple cultures thrive. Lets continue this way as this is what makes us Candians not only different from others in the world but also examples for others to follows. As for racism, its an unfortunate disease that exists in many people. I mean, think about it, just imagine the wide variety of resteraunts we will have to go to in the near future in Milton. :p It will beat the McDonalds and Pizza Hut..... |

kf095: Nope. Not a social worker. Just lived in Milton most of my life (from age 7 to 20). Then I moved to Mississauga (to Malton, where there is alot of East Indian, West Indian, and Italian people). So, being that I grew up and went to school in Milton when it was still just a dinky town that only ran from Thompson Rd to Bronte St, and Derry Road to Steeles Ave, know alot of people who have stayed in town (and those who didn't), I can make a statement like that because i've heard it from those who have stayed. And it is NOT based on any race in particular, it's the influx of people in general and the problems that come with it ie. mostly traffic. And be careful when you make a statement like "As long as one culture is not replaced by another." You know what? If us "European" people want to have more "European" people around us, maybe we need to have more kids(?) lol Or, move to Georgetown! lmao Seriously though, Milton needed a kick in the pants and more multiculturalism. It IS a good thing. |

We have three. And be careful too, at least with lol and lmao. Multiculturalism is good. I learn it and I was living in the country with multiculturalism from 0 to 36. But it was not something easy and not only about fun. This is why I'm very careful. |

I can joke about it, cuz i'm of European descent. You know what, we have to laugh at ourselves sometimes, and those who are like us and act like idiots. You can't just be angry all the time. Glass half full kind of stuff. |
