Hey Everyone!

We're looking at getting central vac installed (we just have the standard Mattamy "rough ins" that came with the house).

Was wondering if others had this installed afterwards (rather than through Mattamy), and if so, where did you get it from, what kind did you get, how much did it cost?

It seems to range in price from $600 and up (that's installed). Looks like installation is about $200. Does anyone know who installs them cheaper, or is that a good price?

Is central vac worth it over a regular upright vacuum?

Any help would be appreciated.

IMO, if you know how to hold a screw driver then you can install central vac. Purchase a unit on sale and install it yourself. It is very easy to do.

You need a little more than a screw driver..

Pipe, fittings, PVC cement, pipe cutter, wire, plate inlets, and if you need to get from the basement out to the garage, then a large drill with a large Forsner bit.

And the screw driver should be something like an impact driver in order to get the long screws into the wall for hanging the vac.

I'm with Stevey-Y,

The power of a central vac is going to be better, but if it's convenience that you're looking for, uprights are way better. Storing and hauling around that damn hose is a huge pain in the ass. With the new uprights (dysons, for example), I'm thinking about going for an upright.

I really enjoy my central vac..tons of power & quiet since the vacuum is strap on the wall in the garage.

we went with a central vac in our previous house and now this one ... and i can't go back. very quiet and the dust get sucked right to the garage. much better for air quality in the house :)

we purchased ours at home depot - a Nutone (they are the same as Broan, but just sold as Nutone by Home Depot) and are very happy with it!

as for installation, i agree that you need more than a screw driver.. but hubby did the installation for both homes himself. he's pretty handy, but a wouldn't say it was rocket science either. :D

It's a pain in the ass, but it can be done providing the area underneath where you want it installed is an unfinished room and there is a vac run down there somewhere that it can be tied into.

If there is tile flooring under the counter.. ugh.

installing the piping for a toekick is definately possible after closing.. unless you want the toekick on the second floor :wink: the piping can be installed under the floor via the basement (which is convieniently unfinished). you just have to pick an inconspicuous place under a drawer in the kitchen - which makes the installation of the toekick easier because you can take out the drawer to install it, then put back the drawer and everything is hiden :) oh - they install the ceramic tile under the cabinets, so you may need a mason cutter to make the hole.
my hubby has done it twice now... and would be happy to assist any fellow HVers that are installing one themselves. just PM me and i will rent him out :wink:

Does anyone know if the price sounds good at all? (based on perhaps what you might have paid?).

We found a unit that is made in Canada (which is a bonus!), and comes with a 10 year warranty (which seems to be the longest we've been able to find), and with the basic system it's $399 + $200 for installation, and if we upgrade the vacuum, hose, accessories (which I think we want so there is a steel roller over a wood, its quieter and the hose has an on/off and control switch), it's another $200. So that alone would be about $800.

Is that what they go for? I've seen many that seem "cheap", like at Sears it will be advertised for $449, or $599, but then the small print is about installation and attachments being extra.

Any advice in regards to what a typical price should be aboud would be helpful. I'd hate to find out that $600 - $800 is rediculous when some place out there does it for much less.

Has anyone had Mattamy install the unit? Just wanted some input on what it's like, if it has a steel beater bar, on/off switch on the handle... etc... they really should have a model at the DC that you can play with and see if you like the way it feels in your hand...

did anyone get a central vac installed into their sterling (2000+ sqft). Mattamy is charging $1,400!!!

Which company is it? how much did it cost?
