We moved into our house in January (resale). We have a water filtration system in our basement. Since there are 2 of us and 3 bathrooms, the family bathroom upstairs does not get used very often, however in all three toilets we've noticed a brown sort of mold growing where the water sits in the bowl. It comes away very easily with a toilet brush, but comes back pretty quickly.

We've got bleach tablets in every toilet tank, but this doesn't seem to make a difference.

Anyone else have this?

Oh, it's those pesky Mattamy trolls who live in the attic. When you're not at home, they climb down and poo in your toilet. They never seem to flush properly, though.

Seriously, we had the same problem when we moved into our house a few years ago. Although, the sludge in our toilets were more of a pinkish tone rather than brown. This lasted a couple of years until they finished construction around our area. Since then, it's disappeared. It may be a construction issue.. that's the only thing I can think of.

Yeah, I re-read my subject and realised it could be interpreted the "other" way :)

Actually, pinkish-brown is probably a better way to describe it - it's a darker brown in the toilets with the 2000-flush blue stuff. The area we're in has been finished for over 5 years, so I would have thought the construction issues would have cleared by now, but maybe we're affected by new construction further down the pipes.

Actually just found this - might explain it:

"The bright pink scum really is scum---it's a bacterial mat. It happens most commonly if your water is "hard", but will happen with most municipal water supplies eventually. You remove it with any biocide (bleach, chlorine dioxide, peroxide, one of the organic peroxide "bathroom scrubbers" like Kaboom, etc..). If you want to eleminate the pink stains for ever, you'll just have to clean the bathroom more frequently"
