Post subject:  Bad traffic signal timings
There's a few really bad intersections that have terrible timings. To my surprise, they're new ones! You would think that they were recently surveyed.

The worst one right now is Armstrong & Derry. The left-turn signal is always on regardless of if there are any cars waiting. There are at most 2-3 cars waiting whenever I pass the intersection, yet the light stays green as if there were 20 cars. And Derry meanwhile queues up 20 cars! Who comes up with that?
Holly & Derry is much better since Holly only usually has 2-3 cars and gets time for that many. Mind you, I'm one of the people who comes out of Holly, and I don't mind waiting for a while and only getting a few seconds to cross, since the timing makes sense.

Derry and Ontario are pretty bad as well. Why haven't the left turn signals opened up yet? Oh, and don't get me started on the 3 signals approaching Main & Ontario. Wow, those are timed so it's impossible to get through the intersection without stopping at all three.

Just wondering if people out there agree? Could there be worst timed signals in the city?

Anyone know who I can talk to about doing a survey on those?

If you want to see badly timed lights just take a drive around brampton. I swear that they set the lights up so you have to stop at every single one.

that is why Mississauga is an AWESOME city... lol

in 1987 the City spent millions of dollars networking there traffic light system.

And now there are benifiting from that investment...

although Mississauga traffic is awful at rush hour... but that is because hundreds of thousands commute INTO Mississauga for work.

Maybe Milton should invest into a system now, and plan for the future.

Hi everyone
I have passed your comments onto Town and Regional staff regarding the traffic light timing and they are working on it as they want to co-ordinate them with the new James Snow Parkway south of Derry lights as well when it opens next month. Hopefully all this will be worked out in the next few weeks.

I agree with Brampton lights being awful.

We were trying to turn left onto Queen Street from Goreway Drive, and we were literally waiting for more than 15 minutes. There is construction going on there, but the advance light was not working, and the only time you could get through the light was when it was amber or red, and usually it was like one big truck that got through. It was BRUTAL.

I'll toss my two cents into that hat. I've always said that most non-major intersections should switch over to an flashing amber/red at a certain time of the night and switch back just before the morning rush.

Nothing is more infuriating then getting stopped at a 4 interval stop at 3am for one car turning left. (by 4 interval I mean one of those dedicated left both ways intersections that has to cycle through the full rotation every time).

Firstly, thank you Colin Best for conveying this message to the planners, I really hope something is done about it. I can't wait until the next Municipal Elections so I can be on your campaign!

Secondly, Mississauga has terrible traffic signal timings, you definitly have to speed through a few of them to get through. Although they had the right idea with the system, its implementation is terrible. I lived in Mississauga for over 10 years before moving to Milton. Just try getting through Brittania in the city. Some streets might have good timing, just none that I've seen.

The system of flashing red/yellow at night is brilliant. I saw it in Winnipeg , and I think it's excellent. It's an easy fix, and I would consider it common sense. Surprises me why all cities don't do it :roll:

Basically, one way of the intersection is blinking yellow (the busier way), and the other way is blinking red.

What happens; The intersections becomes a 2 way stop.

Example is Derry, you can know drive straight without stopping, but the less busy streets that intersect, has to stop like at a stop sign.

Of course this would be done late at night like 10pm or something where traffic is light, and so the side street doesn't have to wait since there's no traffic to wait for, and a car on derry will just go straight through. Great for the environment too btw. Idling burns a lot of gas.

Ya. Basically the busier street gets a flashing amber and the side roads get a flashing red. If you don't know what flashing amber or red indicates, time to break out that driver's ed book! ;)

Busy intersections would still have normal light cycles though.
