To be honest with you I've been living near clark/bennett for almost 4 years now and can't remember the last time I smelt the dump. I actually like the convenience of having it close. I'm sure everyone knew the ramifications of living near a dump when they bought. Sorry to be playing devil's advocate but myself, I just haven't noticed the smell. Guess I'm one of the weird one's huh? |

Anyone sure it's the landfill? I also noticed a smell outside last night. I didn't think it was the landfill, it smelt more like manure so I assumed maybe it was farm related....If someone calls the Town of Milton would they know? Or the Champion newspaper? Who's in charge of "smells" ? |

We were commenting on the smell aswell. A couple of weeks ago I smelt what I thought was the farm just south of us putting manure on the fields. This week the smell was more rancid...like rotting food. I wondered if it was the A&P dumpsters! Kinda glad it's not! |

I know the smell you are smelling in the thompson and derry area, and it is not the dump. I don't know what exactly it is, but since my house is between that point and the dump, and in all my years of living here I've never smelled the dump. I cycle regularly around the dump, including right down first line which runs on the back of the dump, and it NEVER SMELLS! Dumps and landfills are generally really good about smells, because they bury it all as fast as can be to keep the animals out. In fact landfills generally don't work great for biodegradable waste as they cover it up so fast, and limit the access to oxygen. You want something that actually smells go to a recycling facility where stick pop in unwashed cans and bottles molds and attracts bugs. |

Sorry everyone but its not the landfill site. Earthmovers and bulldozers are scraping the topsoil and old straw bales on a property on the east side of Tremaine Road north of Derry behind the Fieldgate and Greenpark sales office. You can see the work being done from Derry Road. The old farm had dozens of the large circular straw bales that have been there for almost a decade which have decomposed inside which has created that smell. I work on Bronte street just east of the work and it is even more powerful here. The Town by-law enforcement officers have been receiving calls throughout town as the wind is usually from the west blowing the dust and smell everywhere. The landfill site covers the garbage every night and takes extensive measures to control odours and other concerns since it's opening in 1992. The Town and Regional Health Unit are both working with the contractors to clean up the situation. Colin Best Local & regional councillor Wards 2 & 4. colin.best@milton.ca |

I found it usually smells like ass between 7-8:30PM, but at other times, I don't smell anything. I never thought it was the dump, and always assumed it was from the farms nearby. |

I've driven up and down 25 several times a week for the last 5 years.. never smelled the landfill. However, this is the time of year that manure gets spread... I've smelled that all over the outskirts of the GTA. |

If you are looking for a bad smell, try being at the Appleby GO station in the late afternoon. It's a few blocks from the Maple Leaf rendering plant. Smells like raw sewage. |

I smelled the odour on Tuesday after lunch on Steeles with some friends from Toronto. They commented on the smell and I told them it must have been a pig farm or maybe a mushroom farm. It wasn't your regular manure smell. Then I remembered, for the last 2 weeks there has been an awful smell at Dundas and Appleby Line. I stopped at the WalMart store there and I almost had to get back into my car. It was overpowering. I felt so sorry for the houses and businesses in the vicinity. Going north on Appleby Line after, I saw some fields being plowed with very black earth and wondered if that was it. I guess it can be smelly sometimes living "in the country". Jeanne |

Hi aishaali Actually the 100 acre farm being scraped is owned by Mattamy who are coming to the Planning and Administration committee next Monday October 15th for a technical report with a proposal for 600 homes. The bulldozers started work on Monday which is the reason why you have not had this smell in town before. There has been similar work and smells as old farm proiperties are scraped off and decomposing material dug up in north Burlington with north Oakville to start next year. I requested a staff report at the last council meeting for measures to reduce the impact of dust and odours during construction of large properties such as this. Since the rest of the Sherwood survey is going to be even closer to Hawthorne Village and the Hospital south of Derry road and east of Bronte street. Check milton.ca under upcoming reports for more information on this and other projects. Colin Best Local & regional councillor Wards 2 & 4. colin.best@milton.ca |

Its definitely not the dump.. The smell started at britannia on 25 coming into milton. Also, if the dump smelled, then Rattlesnake Golf Course wouldnt be that successful. |

The foul odour is not new, and is likely compounded by the presence of all those things described in this thread. Nobody mentioned our infamous biosolids storage facility nor the sewage pumping station west of Bronte next to the landfill. Ah, the sweet smell of success and growth! Maybe the Region should look into the matter. That awful rotten meat like smell is awful....... |
