File this one under Dalton's list as "See folks, I CAN keep a promise!"

Family Day holiday has been announced for the third Monday in February. Now I all know we would like a day off during the February Blahs but it is really worth it?

We need a break in Feb.

I would have liked it to be either on the first or second week
because of the kids march break which is usually the
first or second week of march.

And this year - the Easter holiday is on march 21-22-23.

Oh well,
a holiday is a holiday - a break to spend time with family. :D

I like the concept, and doubt it would have much impact on overall efficiency in the workplace. In my job, the work from that day would simply be spilled over into the two working days prior and after the holiday, thus having no negative effect. Of course, that principle probably wouldn't hold if we were adding another 5+ days to the annual statutory holiday calendar.

I wonder if there is any empirical evidence about the pro's and con's in terms of GDP when additional statutory holidays like this are added to, or removed from, the calendar. In fact, I would almost expect retailers to see a boost in terms of sales - but do they have to pay staffers a higher wage for working on a holiday?

Mike apparently 42% of the population or 66% depending on your electoral system are in favour of it.

I like the idea of a break in Feb., but to me, one extra paid holiday doesn't give me close to the money back I've had to spend on the HEALTH TAX that comes off my pay every week!

I'll be on Mat leave anyways, so it doesn't really matter.

But, it's about time he actually KEPT a promise. Good for him on that.

Ok, well I didn't vote Liberal, but I guess this takes the sting out of them winning another majority  . I work for a global company and I see how my Euro colleagues automatically start with 6 weeks vacation every year. Let me tell you, we are severely deprived of vacation time, and I don't want to hear about how many billions of dollars another vacation day will cost businesses. Cry me a freaking river. We are very deserving of another day off so I say we run with it. My only regret is that it's called "family day" which sounds so stupid. I really think that the most deserved holiday would be in November marking Rememberance Day. But Feb. is a tough month and the "family day" is well timed, so I will take it and thank Dalton for it!

How can there be any complaints about a new holiday???
Canada is one of the worst countries in the world to offer days off.

Lets see when I worked in England I got 1 week vacation for every 3 months worked, yes 4 weeks a year(that's standard in Europe) here I get 2 weeks a year to start and maybe 3 after 5 years service and 4 after 10 years...

don't believe me check out this thread..

http://www.expatfocus.com/index.php?nam ... ic&t=12290

a small discussion on vacation time in Canada.

If Europe's small business can do it I'm sure we can, Canadians are work alcoholics and we don't have to take it anymore just because we grew up that way and saw our parents go through it, thinking it was normal with the rest of the world.

So for those of you who do not want to see another holiday, look at your kids and say " I'm sorry I'd rather be at work than to spend time with you!"

I am for this holiday, but it is easy to see the other side, small business and big have to pay for employee saleries.

So to them it is a new tax.

The other side would be giving us what most everyone else in the world is getting... more paid days off!! If you ask me all those business's are getting off lightly!!
What about those business's that open on this new holiday, especially malls and stores, its -10 degrees outside, 4 inches of snow, wait til you see how busy the malls are!!

CHA-CHING!!!!!!!!!!!$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I'm sure if you look at it statistically, it is only the smallest fraction of the worlds first world nations that get additional days off, not the billions in china and india who work longer and for less.

I'm not saying that a new holiday isn't good for me, I rather like it, but for those who do have small business that are not in the retail or entertainment sector will lose productivity, and have to pay salaries.

I'm sure ski hills will do great, I don't know how retail will do, or if they will bother to open. As you have to pay your staff overtime on holidays (even part timer workers.)

So I appreciate your zeal for this new holiday, I for one and looking forward to it, but I am not under the illusion that we "deserve" anything such thing, nor the illusion that many companies will suffer no gain from this.

An additional statistic to watch is hospital maternity wards 9 months later... :) Like you said, -10 outside...
