Actually, same thing happened to me in a house we had in Calgary and I ended up phoning the manufacturer of the fireplace down in the states. Once he found out that he had no way to make money from me calling in a repair guy he told me that all I had to do was take the wall plate off the switch and vacuum it out. I honestly thought the guy was on crack but I did it anyways and my fireplace worked perfectly after that. Apparently there is a problem with the light switches and dust. Hope this helps.

Could be that too. If you try the vacuum thing dont touch the bare wires. it can hurt.
