Aside from the great idea of having one more day off, do you believe November 11th should be observed as a Statutory Holiday ALL ACROSS Canada?
Absolutely! It should be the same across the country and we owe it to the veterans and deceased to reflect and show appreciation for their sacrifices. 85%  85%  [ 39 ]
Not at all! It should be up to each governing province to decide on any and all Stat holidays. 13%  13%  [ 6 ]
It doesn't really matter to me. 2%  2%  [ 1 ]

No, but not for your reason

I think the schools do a great job of teaching and sharing on Remembrance Day and should be kept in school to honour it. I don't feel that the same level of solemnity or response would be observed in the home enviroment.

I'd like to see it be a holiday so that I could go to my local cenotaph and pay my respects. However, I am a teacher and do know that most if not all my kids would sleep right through 11am despite the effort I put into teaching the importance of the day. Despite that, I'd like to see it as a holiday for my original reason (would also like to take my 2 year old daughter and start her early on understanding its importance).

I say no. If it becomes a stat, it will just loose it's meaning. If it means that much to you, take the day off of work against your holidays. I was in BC for Nov 11, they honour it, us Ontarians would just treat it as another meaningless stat, and would want it to fall on the monday or Friday closest to the date.

If they can shut down the whole country tighter then on Christmas day with stores being closed etc... then I think they should make it a stat, but withour touist zones and all this BS, most people will just waste the day away and not do anything to remember those who have fallen.

Well Matt, alot of people waste stat holidays no matter what, no matter what the meaning of that day is. But having an official government holiday on that day marks it as something, rather than just another day. There are lots of people who don't do anything for Anzac Day back home, but there are more people who go to the parades for the veterans every year as well. So it's really what people make of it.

What I am trying to convey is go hard or go home.
If they are going to make it a holiday, close everything, no exceptions like Christmas. Stat holidays have become a joke especially in Ontario over the last 10 years.

What about family day, shall we really family it up at home, or just go home :)

I could care less about another day off. However, I do think that the importance of the day is barely recognized in Ontario and I think that's tragic. A few moments of silence @ 11am is hardly enough respect for all the people who served. The Canada so many of us enjoy today is because of the sacrifices made by all those men and women.

I think making it a stat holiday would be just make most Ontarians use it as a day off and ignore the significance of the day. I'd rather see more involvement from Employers to make it a day of importance on the level that it deserves.
Quote:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— John McCrae

i wish someone told me it was a holiday in saskatchewan last year:( my poor baby's birthday was ruined since everyone was away that weekend...grrrrrrrrrrr...i vote for a holiday...we could use another one in ontario....we have less holidays than most provinces...

That is exactly why I think it should not become a stat. you just want another day off just for the sake of having another day off.

I personally take the day off out of my holidays. One day out of my holidays is nothing considering how important that day is to me.
