If you can wait for a deal, Home Depot has fairly good sales. I got a belt-drive one with keypad, backup battery, etc. for $220 on a sale. The lowest hp is fine for single-garage. I think that's 1/2 hp nowadays.

Thanks Bob.

There is one main manufacture of Garage Door Openers. That's Chamberlain.

They make all the ones for Sears under the Craftsman name, Liftmasters and their own brand name Chamberlain.

The better warranty is from Sears. If there is a problem with the unit, Sears will repair it.

If there is a problem with the Chamberlain unit you purchase from Home Depot, then you have to call Arizona, describe the problem, hopefully diagnose the right solution, wait for them to MAIL you a part from Arizona, and then replace it yourself. I've had to do this for a couple of Chamberlains over the summer.

Installing an opener can be easy with the right tools and knowledge. My first one took me over 6 hours. Now I have it down to about 68 minutes (yes I do time myself). But I've also done several hundred of them.

There are a number of different features available, but they all pretty much work exactly the same. You can read about some of the features at http://www.phonejacks.ca/gdo.html under What To Get.

If you can, go to the US and buy one there, I got mine 1.5 years ago for 170 that was 399 cdn at sears.

It would be even cheaper now.

i have the .25 Belt drive. My friends always comment how quiet it is when it opens. My son's bedroom is right above the garage. The extra $$$$ over 15 years is well worth the cost. For a garage door opener and the life span I would be less concerned about cost and more concerned about the noise and quality. to save $30 to get a no name brand is not worth it.

Matt

Note: Purchasing goods in the US means if there is a problem with it, you have to take it back there. Do not always expect the Canadian equivalent company will be responsible for it.
