I called Cogeco, and they are coming out with local telephone service this year. She wasn't able to confirm a launch date for their VOIP product. I have experienced enough problems with Bell to convince me to go with a Cogeco bundled Cable, Telephone, Hi-Speed suite. |

If interested, I can still activate all the jacks in your house to work with your VOIP service. This depends on your service provider of course as well as some cabling infrastructure in your house. There's always options! Every company that provides a service will always have problems in some area or another. I've had my share with Bell and Cogeco. But my experience has been that my Bell telephone service has always been more reliable than my Cogeco cable service. |

Voice over Internet Protocol. It's a way of routing all your incoming and outgoing telephone calls through your high-speed internet connection. You still get a regular phone number, and people can call you with their regular telephones/cellphones/tincans/etc. The advantage is usually in costs. It costs less to physically route these calls through an internet connection. Less in infrastructure and less and in long distance. There are also some other technical advantages for people who may want to do some funky stuff down the line. The disadvantage is you are going through your internet connection.. so if the internet connection goes does down, you don't have a phone. No power? No telemaphone. |

Bell still has to come to your house to activate the line in a new subdivision. Reason being the pylons (the grey/green boxes at the side of the street) do not have any connections made between it and the demarc on the side of the house. A technician will usually have to come by, crack open the pylon, find the wire pair leading to your house, crimp it onto the right pins on the board, and then go to your house and make sure it is properly connected to the demarcation point. Everything after the Bell demarc point on the side of your house is your 'problem' 
And yes, others (ahem, me) can bring the connection inside the house and do everything else for much cheaper. |

Paul, did you enquire about a cell phone with your local number? They should be able to provide that at the regular rate. Then when the labour disruption is over, they transfer your number to you actual house. they do this in natural disasters and all that. I think it is illegal or some code violation if there is no land line phone in a subdivision due to fire and request for emergency services. they have to provide you with something. I will check with some friends at bell. Matt |

I find it strange that Entourage has been on strike for a while and I just only found out a week ago or so. I listen to 680 news and read the paper but don't hear much about it. Didn't Bell just buy Entourage a few months ago?? If so, I suspect it will be a long strike/slowdown. Matt |
