Post subject:  Mirror Image house

Hi,
I found out recently that my house is mirror image. I am having trouble adjusting as everything seems backwards to me - anyone feel the same?
We are Plan 4C - 34' lot

Tina .... I was the same way, until I walked through a mirror image home and familiarized myself with it. I'm actually already set on what it will look like and am looking forward to it being different!

I had the same problem..so my husband made a photocopy of the plan in the mirror image which helped alot, plus we walked through a model of our home which was an even bigger help to visualize it better :)

I moved into a “Mirrored” floor plan back in 2005 and there were a few issues.

Some of the closets were framed incorrectly and they put the sump pump in the wrong corner, as if they were using the non-mirrored plans to do their work.

They caught and fixed the framing error before the drywall went up but I had to argue long and hard that the sump pump was in the wrong corner and needing moving.

No Builder likes to bust up a concrete floor to fix a problem.

I was told at various levels of customer support that the sump pump was located at the optimal place for drainage and that there was no problem. I pointed out that my house was a mirrored floor plan and that when you flipped the plan the sump pump location should also be flipped.

The reason I argued so, was that we spent extra monies on upgrading the one corner basement window, that was away from the furnace corner, so that we could get a little bit more light in the basement and then they went and put the sump pump right below this window and then ran the ugly black PVC pipe from the hole in the floor to the top of the basement ceiling right in front of my upgraded window.

I was not happy.

Luckily for me I had gotten a copy of the model blue prints/drawings/plans from the city, that builder had registered with the city, so I could easily see that I was correct and the builder was wrong.

The builder never informed me that they would move the sump pump, but when I came to inspect the house one day I noticed that it was moved.

So in the end they fixed all of the mirrored issues, but not without some anxious moments.

By the by, the builder has to provide the city with a copy of the blueprints/drawings for each model/elevation they are building. I would recommend that you contact the city a get your own copy of these blue prints. Besides being an interesting document about your house, you can use them to keep the builder honest.

In addition to sump pump issue, we noticed that on the blue prints our three side by side main window setup in our front room call for Screens in the 2 outside windows, where as the builder only put a screen in the middle window. We pointed this out to the builder, put in on the deficiency list and the builder later changed to 2 screens from 1. Without the blue prints we would have never know.

i'm in the same house as you and mirrored as well, the upstairs I dont mind so much, the basement on the other hand totally messed me up, not sure why, maybe it was cause there was all the hay down there, or it was so much bigger then I thought lol

May I ask how much the blueprints cost? It's certainly a good idea and if it's registered with the city, isn't the builder "supposed" to follow it anyway (without you having to argue with them)?
