Hi Milton1
Thanks for the question which is important to many new and moving residents. I contacted the clerks department and was given these four scenarios which should assist everyone who wants to vote on Monday October 25th.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scenario One
You live in Oakville and are buying a house in Milton, which closes on or before Election Day (October 25, 2010), but you will be moving to Milton after October 25, 2010
As of the closing date, you are considered an owner and are eligible to vote in Milton. Because at this point you do not live in Milton, you are considered a 'Non-resident Elector" and are not eligible to vote for the school board, but you can vote for all the other offices. You may also vote in Oakville as a resident.
Scenario Two
You currently live in Milton and are buying a house in Milton, which closes on or before Election Day (October 25, 2010), but you will not be moving to the new location in Milton until after October 25, 2010
As of the closing date, you are considered an owner. Because you already live in Milton and you won't be moving into your new house until after the election, you are required to vote where you live, not at the new address as you are only allowed to vote once in the Town of Milton, regardless of how many properties or businesses you own, and it must be your place of residence.
Scenario Three
You currently live in Milton and are buying a house in Milton, which closes on or before Election Day (October 25, 2010), and you will be moving to the new location in Milton on or before October 25, 2010
As of the closing date, you are considered an owner. Because you will be in your new location before you vote, you are required to vote at the new location, not your old address.
Scenario Four
You currently live in Oakville and are buying a house in Milton, which closes after Election Day (October 25, 2010), and you will be moving to the new location in Milton after October 25, 2010
As of the closing date, you are considered an owner. Because the closing date is after the election, you are not eligible to vote in the 2010 election in Milton. You may vote in Oakville only.
Please note electors are required to vote where they live, not where they own a business or other property within the Town of Milton.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The clerks department are using Oakville as an example of any other municipality. If you do not receive a voters card please contact the Town at 905-878-7252 to make sure you are placed on the revised voters list or bring your ownership and ID information to the poll to receive a ballot as noted in the above posts and at
www.milton.ca under the Election 2010 icon where you can find out more information on voting, new wards and candidates.
