Has anyone considerded having Sign Language interpreters at this meeting. Milton has the largest Deaf population in Canada and these meetings should be accessible to the them.....As should Council meetings.

To be honest, I did not think about this. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to help out in this capacity?

Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf
Milton, ON

Phone: 905-878-2851

I called EC Drury School for the Deaf in Milton and asked them that question, they transferred me to a woman named Leslie, I left her some voice mail with the all candidates meeting information and asked if she could call me back to see if anything's possible. Steve, your the host so feel free to call them up (ask for Leslie). I just thought that EC Drury might have received requests like this in the past and might have volunteers available.

All of the final details are just about in place. I will e-mail the candidates this weekend with a "top 10" list from the residents of Milton (I have received a ton of responses so far). See you on the 6th.

Thanks Rick, I will call them tomorrow. I've been "slammed" at work the last few days and I'm still catching up on my posts here & on twitter.

Hi everyone, here is an update on the "charity" portion of the all candidates meeting on the evening of October 6th at the Seniors Centre.

We are going to support two causes:

1. A fundraiser for the Hainey family (who lost their house in a fire).
2. A Thanksgiving food drive for the local food bank.

We will have some volunteers who will be able to collect funds for the Hainey family and non-perishable food items for the food bank.

I am in contact with one of the friends of the Hainey family and I will personally pass over 100% of the funds raised to her to give to the family.

Or you can donate some non-perishable food items that I will take to the local food bank in time for Thanksgiving.

There is no pressure or requirement for anyone in attendance to support these causes, but it would be appreciated if you could spare something and remember that every little bit counts.

Thank you. :D

FYI I've received an update.

The cost for sign language interpreters would be a minimum of $800 (i.e. they only use 2 interpreters minimum at events, at $400 per interpreter for half days, so that works out to be $800). They do not have any volunteer sign language interpreters :-(

I was going to post about this today as well and that is the same information I received. These events are being paid for personally and that cost is unfortunately not in the budget. I do hope that this will not discourage people from attending these all candidate meetings.

Call the Canadian Hearing Society in Mississauga, they will give you the best advice.
Explain the situation also that it is a grass roots type meeting organized by local citizens and ask if they can assist in any way.....you never know,.......explain that you have no funds to support paying interpreters but you would like the Deaf community to have full access as Milton has such a large Deaf community...its worth a try.... as they do absorb the cost for some events

Town Council meetings I would imagine are a whole different story as they have an obligation to be accessible and the funds to support it

Thanks for all your efforts.........

Steve

There was a signing "school" in the block next to sushi-ya on Martin Street - I don't know if it is still there but if it is they may be able to help and do it for the free publicity that they would get!

If I am in Town in the next 24 hours I will check and let you know. If they are open I will go in and ask.

Regards

Martin

Thanks Martin, I am getting the e-mail ready to send to all of the candidates this weekend and you'll have it by the end of the weekend.

All of the final details for the meeting as well as a "top 10" list of resident concerns has been sent to all of the candidates. Due to the amount of responses I received, I could not include every single question. I hope you come out to the meeting to speak to the candidates and to see what they have to say.

Ask and you shall receive, in no particular order of importance.

Milton hospital expansion
Safety of our streets and neighbourhoods
Fiscal responsibility of town finances
Management of the future growth of Milton
Communication with residents by staff and council about town issues
Transportation management (transit, roads, etc...)
Derry Green Business Park
Milton Education Village
Environmental responsibility (clean energy, greensapces, escarpment, etc....)
Relationships with other levels of government
