When looking at players like Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Steve Nash, Ray Allen etc... who weren't even close to being a first pick and comparing them to Andrew Bogut, Andrea Bargnani etc..., I Question the need for tanking to draft a great player. It all seems nothing more than luck and how a player matures. You may pick the best player available but who guarantees that player is not already maxed out on BB IQ and improvement.

Below is the list of the all time 1st overall picks:

Is it really luck or are some teams development programs that much better than others?

I definitely agree draft prospects are overhyped most times. In professional sports, you need to deal with a whole new level of pressure, criticism, injuries, mental challenges, competitors, dealing with temptations off the court/rink/pitch, and those who can't or are not prepared to work hard don't end up being superstars.
