Thanks patrob. I have another question along the same lines.
Assuming that your subfloor is solid, is there any advantage to buying 3/4" engineered hardwood over 5/8" or 1/2" engineered hardwood?

Hi Rob
I read on one of your earlier posts that solid sawn engineered is better than ply based engineered...why is that?
Also, do you have any experience, good or bad, with the Adamson brand 5/8" engineered sold at Core?

I will answer both questions together.

3/4" Solid Sawn Eng. is 3 layer solid lumber with a very thick veneer layer which can be refinished as many times as regular 3/4" hardwood. It's extremely rigid with above average lengths. Because it's only 3 layer, there is a lot less chance or possibility for de-lamination vs. multi layer plywood based products. Plywood based products are a lot more flexible & if you have any deflection in the sub-floor, the thinner products will follow it exactly vs. the 3/4".

We have not had a chance to install that product yet.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Patrob,
We had Dc meeting yesterday. We want builder to do hardwood flooring and stairs as well for us because of previous bad experiences. We selected the mirage brazil nut in maple for stairs and living, dinning and great room.We selected arizona white for paint, anatolia rustica almond for tiles and wenge color cabinets in maple.I need your opinion somewhat confuse about hardwood color that how it will come out with the rest of things.secomd thought is to go with Mirage vienna.Need yor opinion on hardwood and color as well. Thanks

Sorry to hear you decided to install your hardwood through the builder. If you would have gone with the right company after closing, you would not have to deal with any bad experiences  :) I would prefer to go with Mirage Vienna since I am not familiar with the Brazil Nut colour as it's new & only made for Mattamy so adding it later in the bedrooms might be difficult. The colour combinations will work good with your choices.

If you still have the chance to change your mind on the hardwood with the builder, I would be happy to provide you with a quote. We have many happy Mattamy homeowners who we installed hardwood for, actually just came back from Milton today

I will second Patrob's opinion here as we made the grave mistake of having hardwood floor installed through our builder in our two previous homes. The first was a Bruce hardwood which is simply an inferior product and the second was Mirage which might have been a better product, but the builder did an awful job on the install. There were gaps the thickness of a quarter within the first year, and they trample the floors with their construction boots on a daily basis.

This is one of the main reasons we are having the work done after the fact. Moreover, you can have a better product installed for a lower price than the builder offers for an inferior product.

Totally agree. Had my hardwood installed by Patrob and they are the very best in the business!

Thanks for sharing your story! You will love your new hardwood floors, I guarantee it

I am looking for an opinion on 5" engineered oak harwood...Vintage, which I know is a high quality hardwood vs Kentwood. I am not familiar with Kentwood but saw them in a home magazine, brushed oak. They look beautiful. Anyone have any thoughts on the quality factor of Kentwood hardwood? Thanks....

Their engineered is thinner with a thinner wood veneer. Vintage Solid Sawn Eng. is 3/4" thick with very thick top veneer 5 mm & is very rigid & stable when it comes to humidity tolerance. No idea about Kentwood humidity tolerance, it's not listed on their site. Have you seen Vintage's hand scraped oak? What colour are you looking for?

Thanks patrob. We're thinking of the Pewter Vintage hardwood. We've also been considering the Baroque hand scrapped. We will be doing the whole house and am unsure whether the hand scrapped is the right way to go, not sure if we'll tire of it, will it be dated in a few years... This home is suppose to be the forever home so long term thought is being considered... Not sure what to do but have to make a decision soon.

Have you seen Gotham Hand Scraped? We do have the Baroque Hand Scraped installed in our own house & we are def. not getting tired of it :)
We install a lot of hand scraped lately, it's very popular & it will last you for a very long time plus it's more forgiving. Hope you're not getting it from the builder
We recently installed Gotham Hand Scraped, if you want to see some pics, let me know.

I don't think I'd tire of the Baroque either. I do really love the grey/brown tone wood a lot. I was actually looking at the Gotham floor board a couple of days ago when I went to compare the thickness of the Kentwood and Vintage. I found the Kentwood looked laminatey... If have pictures of the Gotham Hand Scraped, I'd love to see them. Thanks :)

I will try to send you some (will PM you as I need your e-mail address) unless I post them here when I get the chance :)

Hi Patrob,

We just had our design appointment done yesterday. We picked Expresso cabinet, Rustica mocha tile and get the stairs stained with Mirage Red Oak Java. Planning to upgrade the hardwood after closing. Just wondering if this hardwood is good color to go with Rustica mocha tile?

Hi:

Can you post a pic of the tiles? I keep hearing this tile name but not exactly sure how they look :) Also this Java colour looks very diff. than the 1st. generation Java which was a very dark brown colour.

Attached is the combination that we choose. Hardwood is there for stair color only. We would do hardwood after closing.
