our basement ceiling just had the joists and the little struts, but not the strapping. my husband is right behind be dictating this so you don't have to decide if you trust my opion or not

Thats the same with my basement Bonnie. X braces between joists and the 1/2" strapping nailed below it. Maybe if we take the strapping down, the whole house will cave in. Tim |

1-3 probably not. Might have been used to keep th joists from twisting before they put the braces between them.I have done my share of basements and we usually take those off sometimes they are also used to run copper pipe on instead of right on the joists, or gas line. Does that Straping run end near your fireplace? If so, your copper gas line was supposed to go there. We have it as well, but our gas guy put the copper somewhere much better (in by a support beam) as opposed to being in the middle of the room. ANother option and this is what we did at my friends dad's place, is buy 2 inch strapping and run them along all your joices perpendicular to them. Then when you put up your drywall (which I assume you are using instead of hanging ceiling) you nail your drywall into the strapping you put up. Will cost more and take a little extra time but you will have piece of mind. I think it is a good comprimise. Matt |
