| Post subject: | Is this a tankless water heater? |
I was looking at my house the other day (Moonseed End) - which is still not 100% finished. I was taking some photos and realized later this white box on the wall looks like a Tankless Water heater - something I didn't order? I remember these being an upgrade, so I assumed I would be getting the old style big round water heaters. Is Mattamy doing tankless for all new village homes, or is this a mistake?

No it's not. It's a force air system to heat up your house. You will get a small hot water tank for your hot water supply. |

The question would be is it dedicated to the home heating system only meaning another tank heater for domestic use? I can't believe the builder would have you paying rent on 2 hot water supply units.

It was explained in this thread. viewtopic.php?f=10&t=53985 I found it in the agreement of purchase and sale under "energy star program" line #5 stating "Dual purpose hot water heating system for domestic hot water and home heating including storage tank and air handler. Dual purpose hydronic hot water heating system and storage tank on lease with designated supplier. Lease agreements to be executed prior to closing" Essentially this is a high efficiency furnace, stacked homes with small duct work need higher airflow which is successfully achieved with air handlers as opposed to conventional gas fired heat exchanged furnaces. The energy star side of this setup is water holds heat a lot longer then a gas fired heat exchanger implying gas consumption to heat water will be less then a conventional gas fired heat exchanger furnace. |

I have the same system in my condo except I have a regular hot water tank not the tankless. Being on one floor and an open concept this system works great. My gas bill over the winter never topped $40 and $21 of that is service charge. I know what a normal gas fired, forced air furnace can cost gas wise, we've had 3 houses. |

It is a boiler system with an air handler. |
