Laura and I love the way that in the country-ish kitchen in the design center, the floor tiles are so variegated. There is a lit-up picture above the standard tiles wall that displays a similar concept: there are many tiles, all in the same family, but varied enough to give the floor a very unique feel. So we questioned the girls who work on Saturday.
They told us that most tiles that say "variegated" imply a variation in pattern, not necessarily in colour. This is obvious when you look at two or three of the same tile. There are only a couple tiles (all in the higher upgrade series) that vary in colour. Here's what the design center girls told us though: the floors that we like have likely been coordinated by taking a few tiles in the same 'family' (so to speak).
To illustrate, we collected enough to create a floor pattern with 10 tiles (some of which were taken from the second design centre). The tiles were of two or three different colours in the same tile family. We then randomly placed them together to create the mixed effect. AND WE LOVED IT!
The only thing is that we were told this is a custom change, that would have to be priced through our consultant, and might be quite costly. I've e-mailed her, but since our colour appointment is late this week, I was hoping someone else might beable to share asimilar experience in case she doesn't get back to us soon enough:

Anyone have any experience with this? Any advice is appreciated.
N.B.: those of you that are interestedin just trying it out at the sales center yourselves, we found that not all tile families work well. Some combinations work better than others. Some combinations that do work, look great with two tiles, others can be done with three different tiles. This takes as much experimentation as the coordination of tiles with counters and cupboards.
