The first phases of Mattamy Hawthorne village used these crappy wood porch columns that basically rot out.

Who knows of a company that can replace them?

If you research or ask around, they should be able to tell you where to get these plastic-looking porch columns that Mattamy uses in the newer phases. I will try asking my friend (who had that probem with his porch columns on his Mattamy-built home in Markham) on what he did.

Water is the enemy of your home.

It won't take long for the wood trim around columns, and siding, to deteriorate if water gets in behind the wood.

Most new homes, where wood siding and trim is used, will have gaps where the water gets in behind it. Once the water gets in behind the boards, it just sits there, and damages the wood, and causes the paint to peel. As well, the ends are usually not sealed well, and moister gets into the wood.

Often, re the wood trim, you can't see the worst gaps from the ground, so you need to check for them from a 2nd floor window. The gaps at the one inch wide flat horizontal surfaces are the worst offenders because water that accumulates on the siding above the trim during rain will run down and get in behind the wood.

These gaps need to be sealed with an exterior grade, paint-able caulking product.

If caulking and painting is maintained, then the wood trim could last indefinitely.

The gaps one year warranty issue. After that it's maintenance.

I talked to susan and the porch wraps in basic paintable PVC are 167 before tax per post.
Im afraid of what they might find inside!!!

This will soon will be everyone's issue in Hawethone, even if they havent noticed it yet.
I watched at least three of my neighbours put new wood around the bottom of their posts last summer.
Sadly it will happen all over again.

This thread started in 2009 and still really hasn't got any great replies about what people have done when restoring their porch columns.
It seems like in this area everyone is having their roofs done or their columns fixed. Can anyone please share their experience on restoring or replacing their posts. Mine are round which seem to be a bigger pain to resto. Contractor recommendations would also be appreciated.

We do have PVC column wraps (square) that are kits to surroud an existing support post. For those of you (Miltonsito) who have round columns we also provide Turncraft (Classicast) style columns that are more stone-like in round or square which will hold up a porch roof (dead load) without any other support post inside. Susan 905-854-2228 x241. Quotes are free. I can also suggest a contractor (local) who can install for the homeowner who desires that option.

Our industry Code of Ethics prevents home inspectors from referring companies to clients. This is intended to prevent a home inspector from referring his brother the roofer and his uncle the HVAC guy to clients. As a result, I do not have some "stuffed rolodex of company names" that I can refer to every time someone needs a name. That does not mean that I can't recommend people who I have worked with personally and I do when I can. That said, finding good people / contractors to do work for you is sometimes as hard for me to find as it is for you.

That said, I'm sure there would be many more answers to this topic if it was in the General Section where it belongs. Lots of people don't even look in this Advertising section.

Hi there

Last year I had my team replace columns at a home.
They rot fast. As soon as we drilled a hole into it the whole column gave in. We replaced with FRP columns.

Send me a PM and i can send my team out to come measure and support anything if need be before it drops on some one.
