Hello

I'm not sure if this question has been asked!

But I'm going to ask again ...

I want hardwood floors but I'm planning on getting a DOG!

How are hardwood floors with Dogs? I really hate the lamiante stuff!

Is there a better brand than another?

Thanks,

Depends what kind of dog it is. Vintage/Mirage is a better brand than others. But regardless sooner or later damage will occur. Don't choose Maple, Ash or some exotics that have a smoother finish (ie: no grain) Oak, Hickory & some exotics hide damage batter.

I would rather spend the same money somewhere else than HD. Birch is called the "cheap maple". It's softer, has a similar grain & shows defects/damages the same way as maple but is cheaper. Oak is a lot more forgiving vs. the other two.

You have to be careful with Goodfellow. I noticed previously that some of their products were imported from China. So read the labels carefully. Here is one negative review from an RFD member http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/show ... tcount=924
:)

hi,

All the floor pics look great!

I have decided to have Mattamy insatll my hardwood. I will go with the Vienna colour.

I have noticed that Mattamy offers 2 widths. 2 1/4 and 3 1/4
The total price difference is about $500.00 for the 3 1/4

My question is, once the floor is laid, is there a difference in the overall look based on the different widths. Is it worth paying an extra $500.00 for the wider floor. Or will people notice the colour more than they would the width.

Thanks!

Yes, there is a diff. in the overall look of the floor with the wider planks. It's a personal preference but more people do prefer the 3 1/4" planks vs. 2 1/4". Is it worth to pay $500 more, sure. I also find the 2 1/4" planks look more "busy" in a room.
You really have to see both floors to see the difference.

Here is a pic that shows 2 1/4" planks

Hi Patrob,

We are looking for a quote for 5" Hand Scraped hardwood floors, in our Family and Dining room.

Can you also tell us what kind of wood the hand scraped wood is?

This is the floor plan.

http://www.mattamyhomes.com/communities ... sp?id=2151

Thanks

The price depends on the species & colour. Not all colours are shown on current website, but many are available.
http://www.vintageflooring.com/colorshs.asp

The hand scraped comes in Hickory, Maple, White Oak, Black Walnut & Merbau. Hand Scraped is a 3 layer solid wood (not plywood) cross patterned engineered.
So it's better than perfect.

I think we will go with Baroque as the color and Black Walnut as the species; I am assuming walnut to be the hardest wood as we have big Dogs. We would like a wood that could resist dog nail scratches to some extent..

Is it possible to get a sample so we can match it to out stairs?

Actually the Baroque colour only comes in White Oak. And no, Black Walnut is not the hardest, it's actually one of the softest species.
Brazilian Walnut (Ipe) is the hardest

Yes, I can provide you with a sample if you want. I will PM you with the details.

Hi Patrob,

I have scanned most of the thread and didn't see the answer to my question, so I apologize if this is a duplicate.

My husband and I have bought a Woodbine Village home (just under 1400 sq. feet on 3 levels) and would like to have hardwood installed after closing. My question pertains to plank width.

I was reading somewhere that you said a thinner plank can make a room look "busy", so would you recommend a thinner or wider plank for small spaces?

(My preference would be a wider 5"-ish hand scraped plank - similar to the pictures that you posted on the first page of this thread, however, I'm wondering how that would look in such a small space. What do you recommend?)

Thanks in advance,
Kathy

I personally prefer wider planks in any given space. You always hear designers say to de-clutter your living space to make it feel more spacious, same goes for floors. Your eyes tend to pick up the lines of the planks, the less lines, the less "busy" it will look.

So going with 5" planks in a smaller space will be perfectly fine. We have installed 7" planks in smaller spaces & it looked great :D

If you want, I can give you a quote on the hand scraped 5" planks. Just PM me your floor plan & which rooms you would like to have done.

Hi Patrob,
How much do you charge per sq. ft. to install? I am looking at about 1200-1400 sq ft. mostly square rooms. Also, do you include screwing down the subfloor? I am thinking of getting moka maple stain hardwood.

Thanks!

We charge $2 sq. ft. for domestic species for straight installation. Some exotics & specialty products (engineered) are more.
Everything like installation on diagonal, borders/designs, floating/glue down installation, re-fastening sub-floors, removing carpet,
quarter round, raising nosings, etc. are all extra. So every job will be evaluated accordingly.

If we have to fix a small squeak or sand plywood joints, that would be at no extra charge. We also make our own reducers to save the home owners some money :D

I know its not actual hardwood but what are your feelings on the Hercules Uni-clic Laminate flooring. Specifically the Artisan series that resembles a hand scraped hardwood plank. My fear with hardwood is that my 10 month old will destroy it in a couple of years. I have heard that the laminate is much more durable, and to me this specific laminate looks really good.

It's true that laminate is more resistant than hardwood. I am not very familiar with that particular manufacturer but as long as you like it, it's fine.
But in case of future re-sale, laminate is not the preferred choice for main floor living areas.

Thanks for the input Patrob. I definitely hear you when it comes to resale. My dilemma is; will destroyed hardwood, or laminate that is in good shape sell better? Obviously hardwood that is in good shape is the preferred solution but I don’t know if it will happen that way. Maybe I’ll just leave the carpet.

If you have no worries about allergies, it's nice to have carpet when you have a little one, less crying when they fall :)

You can easily live with carpet for a year or two & then decide on a beautiful hardwood floor

What is the difference exactly? My wife and I are were also wondering about this.

The difference between Mirage & Bruce:

A lot of Bruce products (not all) have square ends which means they are not beveled on all 4 sides. If you walk barefoot or with socks you will catch the edges & many times if the board is crooked, you can actually see the un-finished edge of the wood.

Mirage planks are more straight, use less glossy finish, better milling, smaller bevel & better quality finish. There is a reason Mirage is more expensive

For the price that Mattamy charges you for Bruce, you can have Mirage or Vintage wood installed after closing & you might still have some money left over :)
Plus you have total control over the installation process
