Hi folks,

I have a friend in the area who is considering trying out a personal trainer for a while. She doesn't want to go in blindly and just sign up with a complete stranger, so I told her I'd come on here and ask for feedback or referrals, if anyone has had good or bad experiences.

Personal trainers can be very expensive, and you never know what you're getting in terms of knowledge from them.

I remeber some years ago, there used to be a 3 day long weekend course that you had to do in order to be a personal trainer at the Permier in Brampton. Not sure if that is still the industry minimum standard, but you can imagine that is not a lot of knowlege crammed into that weekend. You could end up with some kid who does not know much more than you currently do.

Personal training should include a lot more than just telling you to squeeze out 5 extra reps when you want to quit, telling you what your current BMI is, and knowing how all the machines at the gym work.

So my advice is to do what you have done already. Ask questions. Find out what education the trainer has, and what you can expect from the trainer in the sessions. More is obviously better.

There should also be diet consultation IMO. Getting fit is 25% working out, and 75% nutrition. Meaning you can pay all that extra money, and see little results if you are not aware of what's happening in the kitchen.

Took me a while to remember what it was called, but thought I'd post this not only for you Fredd but others who may be interested.
(and let's face it... It's you that is going to the trainer right? not your "35yr old friend" loooolol!)

Anyway, as mentioned eating is the most important part of working out, and step one is knowing how many calories your body needs on any given day.

So check out the "Harris Benedict Formula" as a way to find out how much you need to eat, and what the breakdown is.

This is not part of a fad diet.

Get this part of it down, and workouts will have much more meaning, and maybe even save you the cost of a personal trainer.

Tell her to try out P90X from home - don't need a gym or a trainer and get awesome results - MY FAMILY IS ON WEEK 5 and have already done 90 days last year :)

ok.. so... thanks so far, but let me point out that it is pretty much friendship suicide to give exercise, diet, and weight management advice to a woman in her 30s. hehe...

I was just hoping for some referrals or experiences with local trainers that I could send her way...

A friend of mine is a trainer at Premier Fitness - his name is Jon Etkin, and he's well-certified, as well as a competitive UFC-style fighter, weight lifter, etc.

He's down to earth, and professional. I would highly recommend him to your friend!
