and they were wondering if we would voluntarily push back our closing date by two weeks to give them more time. We are within the 35 days, so they can't push us back legally past 5 days. They said they can finish with the 5 day delay, but would appreciate the extra 2 weeks.

What are your thoughts on this? We don't mind giving them the extra two weeks if it will help our house. We both have a place to live right now and aren't in a rush.

Tell them you can probably handle the extension, but ask for some sort of compensation to offset your new "additional costs" due to the delay being so last minute.... you know, the new arrangements you have to make for a temporary place to live?.. now edit the part of your post out that says you both have a place to live and aren't in a rush so there's no record of that. hehe.

Jonzo,

In the last month I have done a ton of 30 Day and PDI Assist services.

Mattamy is way behind and the homes they are delivering have many unfinished areas, mostly exterior items, but many interior items as well.

Personally, I would give them the extra time if possible. If not, you will move into a home where contractors are walking through your home and hammering nails from dawn to dusk on the exterior. As well, if you take possession early, then you will be doing your PDI early. This limits your ability to inspect items during your PDI because they are incomplete or missing. With people and contractors going through your home all the time, it is more likely that other damages will occur. In this situation, every time you go out, you will need to re-inspect the house when you
get home.

Yeah, I'd ask for something in compensation. Either an extra upgrade, maybe something that hasn't been put in yet that they can do easily. Just an example, but maybe under cabinet lighting, upgraded baseboards, or backsplash, etc.

If you're going to try and ask for something, usually it's easier to get the building team to agree to give you some extra supplies. i.e. boxes of tiles, or some moulding trim, or some doors or sliding mirror kits etc. If any of that may be useful to you if you might in the future finish the basement or something.

Usually asking for $$, or having them do extra-work when they're already a bit behind didn't seem in the past to go anywhere.

Just my 2 cents on past shared experiences from people
