dandelions are really hard to control. But since are only around for 2-3 weeks I don't worry about them too much. I normally just pull the weeds out with an old screwdriver.

Also, we can not do much about them when 1/2 of HV doesn't pull them out and they spread like wild fire

Well here's the thing; most of my neighbours whom I've never seen do any work on their grass (other than cutting) don't have weeds. I do, and I want to be proactive by keeping mine green. I've been pulling them all out like a madman, but if there's no partiucular product you recommend to accelerate their death, I'll just keep pulling.

Can I apply fertilizer again after having done it last week right before it rained?

Don't let your grass get much longer than about 3 inches. Cutting more than a third off the top leaves the grass less resistant to disease and less able to handle the stress of a hot summer. Leave your grass clippings, an inch or less, on the lawn and they will help keep the roots cool and reduce moisture loss. Leaving the clippings for an entire year is equal to one annual fertilizer application.

Any advice on how to get them birds out? I seeded my lawn and everytime I go out there are a dozen birds grazing around. It sucks to water the lawn twice a day (after seeding) only to see those birds having a great time.

Lay down soil and seed, then stamp it down with you feet. Then lay down no more the 1cm of soil again. That way the birds won't get to the seed.

Over fertilizing will not help, it may actually burn the grass

I can confirm this is true. LOL.... Last year i burnt all my grass in the front lawn, had to re-sod it. Ah well - it looks nice now![/quote]

This what i do... and I have the best lawn on the street!!!!

Early Spring

Step One
WAIT! Your lawn will be frozen hard, then too soft to walk on, and then it firms up. When it's ready to be walk on, then move to second step.. I think it will be another week possibly 2 till that happens.

Step two
Rake off the dead grass, don't rake to hard just enough to take the brown grass off.

Step three
Since you and i have a "postage stamp" lawn. I use my garden claw to aerate my lawn, if you don't have one... saw them for sale at home depot for $20. I don't do it everywhere on the lawn, just higher traffic areas.

Step four
Lay down a slow release fertilizer, use a spreader and don't use a lot!

now wait till late spring!!

Late Spring

Step one
Weed your lawn!!!!

Step two
Laying down a little soil will help your grass grow. The type of soil you will be laying depends how you mow; if you rake up your grass clippings or leave them on your lawn after you mow. If you rake your grass you will need to lay down a soil with nitrogen. If you leave your clipping on your lawn you can use a soil with little or no nitrogen in it.

If you are going to skip laying down soil just fertilizer the lawn.

Step three
My lawn is also in shade too. I picked up a lawn seed specially made for being the shade. I got it on sale at Walmart. Lay the seed down by hand, speading evenly and in one direction. After lay it down walk over the seed and soil a little to pacl it in a little. For larger lawns, use a roller.

Summer!!!

Step one
Mow your lawn.. I like to keep my grass a little long. I find with a small lawn, longer grass makes the lawn look thicker and healthily.

Step two
Water your grass! But not to much... you can over water your lawn and it won't grow. Water in the morning or at night, watering during the day can damage your grass!!!

Step three
I also like to fertilize my lawn a few times in the summer. But do it when it going to be cool for a few days. And you don't need to water your lawn after you fertilize.

Fall

You can follow the summer step for as long as the weather is good. Just fertilize before the first freeze!

There you go!!!!

So I'm assuming now is the time to start step #2 of the 'Early Spring' section above?
Great advice by the way!

We raked our lawn and then emptied a couple of bags of grass seed this long weekend and then the little drizzle this morning should set the seeds for growth...

Should you always lay soil when seeding? Is the soil, seed, soil method the best approach? I've been told it's good to over-seed (3 times what is suggested) is this true?

I got the same advice to over seed and that should take care of most of the weed issues. I am trying for the first time on this over seeding so let's see what happens this year. May just get a foot of grass to cut every weekend :)

Wait another 2 weeks before you seed. The seeds will not germinate yet -the ground is still too cold.

And as someone who has seen bag after bag of seed fail, trust me – scalp your lawn (mow it SHORT), seed, then top-dress with a GOOD topsoil. Manure sucks. Get a good quality topsoil. Then ensure your lawn is watered daily for 2 weeks.

Blanket spray your lawn with the appropriate pesticide early in the year, note that you may have to drive to the US or Order Online. Cosmetic pesticides that are currently banned from being sold in Ontario seem to the be only ones that are actually effective. You can still order them and have them shipped in from out of province!

Spot spray any reoccurring areas where issues arise.

Goodness gracious, I need to dig up this thread again because I cannot keep up with pulling weeds even though I've fertilized with CIL Golfgreen and yesterday spread some grass seed in hopes of thickening the grass.

Short of paying for professional intervention (which I am seriously thinking of at this point), anyone with nice, lush, green grass have any counsel on what I should do with an already-existing weed problem?

Dandelions are popping up everywhere but I can pull them out. Any ideas how to deal with clover and crab grass without pesticides?

For this spring, the only way to get them out is hard-work. Get on your knees and start pulling!

To avoid this scenario next year do the following:

- physically yank out weed
- Get scotts turf builder with crabgrass preventer, apply with the push spreader.
- water, water, water.
- Mow lawn and mulch, don't bag the grass - it feeds the lawn.
- Wait 3-4 weeks. Apply grass seeds and cover with lawn earth.
- water, water, water.
- Mow lawn and mulch, don't bag the grass - it feeds the lawn.
- Mid summer apply Scotts fertilizer
- Same routine, water and mulch
- For fall, make sure you bag your last mowing. Apply winter care fertilizer.

Next spring, seat back and relax and watch your neighbor pull off dandelions and crabgrass while your lawn is an amazing green lush.

How do you pull out crab grass? I tried and found that the roots grow vertically but horizontal as well. It's as if the crab grass are secretly holding hands under the soil.
