In our Ensuite Bathroom of our bedroom there are 2 vents/fan's (1 in the little enclosed toilet room and the other in the middle of the ensuite).

When ever it's a little windy outside, it seems the outside little slats flutter open and shut. The noise travels through the short distance of the vent and we hear it in our bedroom. Have tried closing the door, but it's still aannoying when we're trying to sleep.

Anyone else hear their outside piece-of-plastic things where the air vents out keep on opening/shutting? This happens when the fan's not turned on. Just turned off and if there is any type of wind outside at all.

It happens frequently. At least it's woken me up about 2 times each week so far. I guess I'll get used to it eventually.

But is it supposed to do that? Is the wind supposed to be able to open it from the outside? Our old house was a very old bungalow and didn't have these vents in the bathroom, so don't have anything to compare it to really.

I know exactly what you are speaking of. The same situation existed in our home. Woke me up many times. I indicated it on my 30 day inspection back in 2003 and one of our builder's general handymen came out to have a look.

As it was explained to me, it's fairly common. Without even going into our ensuite the gentleman who followed up with us walked me through what was happening to make the noise. He suggested inserting a thin rubber/foam strip that would cushion the impact of the flapping vent door, yet not leave the door too far open when not in use. He was going to do the fix himself and I told him not to bother, I'd take care of it.

The other option might be to "weight" the door just enough that a light wind cannot move it but your fan can still open it.

If you pop open your vent cover from the inside you'll quickly see what's happening and see how you can remedy the situation.

Yes, it's common. Those little vent covers with the flaps are the code minimum.

You can replace them with some better ones that are more of a hood, and inside the hood is the door flap, therefore dramatically reducing the catch of the wind rushing by.

They can be had at Rona for about $15 and can be mounted with some silicone adhesive.
