I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering if this newly expanded strech of Derry is going to be properly lit. As we all know, it's REALLY dark at night, and considering this is the main artery in town for many of us, it seems like a no brainer..
Colin, can you shed light on this?? (no pun intended)

Personally I would prefer that we didn't pollute the night sky with excessive street lighting. As long as some thought is given to the type of lights used I guess it might be OK, but, do we really need to use all that electricity just to light a street? I thought the reason why cars have headlights was for driving at night.

We definitely need the lights on Derry. Its not at all safe at night. Had it been a busy highway like 401 , yes we could wait but I always avoid Derry late hours between 407 & JSP.

Hi busguy and other posters.
I will check with regional staff tomorrow to confirm about the lights.
I know the intersections at 6th and 8th line have to be streetlighted and the 6th line intersection will have traffic lights.

Will post tomorrow when I know for sure.

You guys are kidding right?
Pollute the night sky? It's a main road into town, not a 7-11 parking lot.
I don't think that trying to ensure the safety of thousands of drivers is a waste of money. And we all know that it can be a dangerous stretch of road at night and/or foggy conditions..

Since when are headlights not enough to light a road you're driving on?

I agree, I say use your headlights and keep your eyes on the road and you'll be fine.

I agree!

I've never understood the need for lights on every single street. Light up the intersections if you must, but do we really need to waste so much energy to light up the sky? I often drive in the country, and the unlit roads seem to work very well.

For pedestrians (although some might have what you'd call 'headlights').

I don't think there are going to be a lot of people walking between JSP and 407 ...

I wasn't being a smart ass (in case you thought I was). I was seriously asking that question.

I also seriously answered the question newermiltonian wrote.

Hi busguy and other posters.

Sorry for the delay. Here is the outline of streetlighting along Derry Road between James Snow Parkway and Highway #407 from regional staff.

At the 5th and 6th line intersections there will be street lights begining at the left turn tapers east and west of the roads along Derry.

At Trafalgar road the existing street lights were recently replaced and will remain as it is now.

At 8th line there will be partial lighting on the north-west and south-east corners to light the intersection only.

The existing street lighting at the #407 interchange will remain the same and not be replaced.

There is no further plans to light Derry east of James Snow Parkway until the Derry Green employment area starts in about 5 years time.

Thanks to those who attended the public meeting on Wednesday.
