Both Tiger Jeet and Tiger Ali Singh were named as inaugural members of Milton's Walk of Fame...an honour highly deserved.

The Tigers (Hans family) have grown up in Milton over the course of many many years. They were residents of this town long before many of us were called Miltonians. During this time, they have given back to our community. One of the Hans' sons is a member of the Halton police force, serving and protecting our community. Many stories in the past of what they had to endure from "rabid wrestling fans" and others alike who made life for that family almost unbearable. Too many stories that this family is too proud to talk about. Lets just say life wasnt made easy for them. Yet they stuck it out.

Tiger Jeet Singh is a world renowned wrestler and a classy gentleman who doesnt hesitate to offer his help whenever its needed (Troys Diner and other charities) I remember during the Canada Day Celebrations of Milton's 150th anniversary talking with him and listening to his acceptance speech was moving. More moving still was his son's speech (Tiger Ali) and the pride that both of them felt for their home town. They felt the honour they received by being inducted to the Milton Walk of Fame was the highlites of their lives...and given the careers both individuals had, thats saying something.

I had the privilage of being the soccer coach of their grandson and despite hectic schedules and travelling all over the world where they are still in demand, he made it to most of his grandsons soccer games.

Through all of this they call Milton their home and they burst with pride when they do so.

There are a number (way to many too count) of Miltonians who have lived here and currently live here that deserve the honour of having a school named after them and Tiger Jeet Singh IS one of those people.
Great post Mike! :)

A school name should not a funny wrestler name. Imagine if it would have been “under taker elementary school or Holk Hogan high school”?

I wouldn't be surprised if some big name wrestlers have something important in their home towns named after them... not in their 'wrestling names' but rather with their real names

If this town had more people like Mr Singh/Hans we'd be much better off. Add me to the list of people that support this well deserved dedication.

here's another article about the honour bestowed on Mr Singh: :D :

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/201 ... 21531.html

And there has been a precedent for naming an Ontario Elementary school after a Wrestler:

"Singh is not the first professional wrestler in Canada to have a school named after him, however. That honour first went to Whipper Billy Watson. In 1993, the York Region District School Board named W.J. Watson Public School in Keswick, Ontario, after him for all his charitable works. "

Seriously everyone in this thread needs to chill out; 99% of people who hear the name Tiger Jeet Singh Elementary School will have NO clue that they guy was a former wrestler.

There is NOTHING wrong with naming a school after a man who has been so very involved in the community. Its not like he went around and just paid off people to get his name on the building.

Everyone should be looking at him as a role model of how they should be helping make our community better instead of fighting over why his name gets to go on the building. Look to the positives he's created not the negatives.

Tiger Jeet Singh is one Miltonion that deserves to have the school named after him; if you disagree then go and do something so extraordinary that would make people want to put your name on a school. Put that energy to something useful instead of whining here about what a travesty it is to have a school named after this guy.

W.J. Watson is a good name for a school. Whipper Billy Watson is not.

That said, TJ Singh Elementary or JS Hans Elementary would have been better name choices.
I totally support honouring the man for his charitable work and community involvement, but a more 'professional' sounding school title might be more appropriate, to avoid the negative wrestling and nickname stereotypes some of you are concerned about. ALSO, the term 'Tiger' has lost its lustre as of late, as I'm sure you can ALL agree.

Perhaps they can consider this option still, before the sign goes up?
TJ Singh or JS Hans?

Can we get Tiger himself on here to comment? You folks running for council might be able to get a hold of him for comment :)

I'm sorry...but the name of this topic "...and we need to change it now" with an exclamation point as well as creating a facebook group doesn't seem like the intent of this was "to have some fun"

This has to be the silliest string in the history of the forum. Against the name of the school because it's difficut for young children to say...give me a break....I sell sea shells by the sea shore, peter piper picked a pickeled pepper.

It's a school, who cares that it was named after a 'Distinguished' member of the Milton community who has supported the town and other chariatable causes long before many of the people on this board have lived in Milton.

After all, what do children go to school for? I think that the primary purpose is to get an education and secondary to develop their social skills in relating to others. Just because it was named after a former wrestler do you think that the quality of education that your children receive will be low to non-existant? Come on, who are we kidding, this is purely naieve and prejudiced people and another case of 'NIMBY' and arm chair politicians.

I think the town should be congratulated for honoring a respected member of the community. After reading this stirng, I hope he doesnt get the wrong idea and begin believing that we do not appreciate all he has done in the past and continues to contribute to our 'Growing' community!

School should be named after the community it is from. There are other places for naming buildings after pro wrestlers, like a gym or sports complex of some sort... :?

Thank you very much Kamato. I am so deeply offended by this (silly? prejudiced?) that it will be a long time before I participate in any discussions on Hawthorne Villager again. Just so you know, I live in a small house, with a small car & am living on mat leave benefits, but will be taking time today to make a donation of $ & supplies to a family in need here in Milton. That is the kind of person who you have just offended. :( Suzanne
Hi Suzanne. Any posts on the forum are a reflection of members of the community. I try to not censor posts unless they're breaking laws or are over the top offensive / obscene.

I am sorry that any posts on this thread may have offended you. It's the area we tread between freedom of speech and censorship. What should be censored, and what should be allowed for people to say.

I'm the admin of the forum, and as I previously posted, I'm fine with the new name that's been selected for the school (after learning more - Thanks Mike, John - I'm "more" than fine). But I'd be remiss if I started censoring people who don't agree with my viewpoints.

Please I hope you might reconsider your decision about participating in public discussions on the forums. Maybe instead you could just ignore or skip the threads that you don't feel comfortable with?

Yeah the fact that you've been posting links to wrestling articles and quotes etc., speaks greater volumes about what you were "trying" to say.

Anyways I'm glad that a pro-wrestler has achieved so much outside the ring. Good for him.

My personal opinion would be I'd leave it up to Tiger Jeet Singh on how he likes his name portrayed. But I think from his public appearances in the past, it's obvious he prefers to go by Tiger Jeet Singh.

That's the name that was chosen to be used when inducted to the Milton Walk of Fame. That's the name I've seen associated with his charitable and community actions.
