ALSO, the term 'Tiger' has lost its lustre as of late, as I'm sure you can ALL agree.

Tiger is his name... sure its been ruined by someone who's last name is Woods but can't blame them all.

lol imagine if Tiger Woods were to have a school named after him...

Yeah the fact that you've been posting links to wrestling articles and quotes etc., speaks greater volumes about what you were "trying" to say.

Anyways I'm glad that a pro-wrestler has achieved so much outside the ring. Good for him.

My personal opinion would be I'd leave it up to Tiger Jeet Singh on how he likes his name portrayed. But I think from his public appearances in the past, it's obvious he prefers to go by Tiger Jeet Singh.

That's the name that was chosen to be used when inducted to the Milton Walk of Fame. That's the name I've seen associated with his charitable and community actions.

Some thoughts:

1) I imagine that most of the furor is that the school in question is an elementary school, and the name is the wrestling name. I remember when I was in elementary a bunch of us had a "wrestling match" where we hit each other with chairs. Yeah, we were not smart, but the point is of course that wrestling is essentially a live-action violent cartoon, and not all parents will be thrilled with that.

2) I am generally not impressed when rich people donate their money. A better way of describing philanthropy might be by percentage:

Rick gave 0.82% of his net worth to save the bears
Zeeshan gave 1.22% of his net worth to save the whales
Tiger gave 0.05% of his net worth to save the traffic lights

Yeah, Tiger may have given the greatest amount of money, but I judge generosity by relative, rather than absolute amounts.

3) I do not like the idea of naming public buildings after individuals who are still alive, be it astronauts, principals, or wrestlers.

4) The statement by the trustee that the school needs to be named after a visible minority in order to engage the students who happen to be from that specific visible minority is, in my opinion, incredibly offensive. My particular racial/ethnic background was never represented during my schooling, and I find it insulting that somebody would think that I was a poor student because of this lack of representation. I have never, in my entire life, heard of a worse reason for naming a school.

5) That said, I like the suggestion to use his real name, as opposed to his wrestling name.

Excellent points brought up in your comments.

Ignorance, arrogance and on occasion, personal attacks has brought a vail of darkness over the true discussion.

I've lived in Milton 31 years, am well aware of who Tiger Jeet Singh is and although he does tremendous good for our town, province and country - I can honestly say I don't agree with the decision. That's fine, we all have our own opinions which we are expressing... and allowed to.

It is disgusting that people are using the quote tool for prejudice & personal attacks against people who are simply expressing their view.

Back to the facts, those opposed, for the most part, the key issues are:

1) Wrestling: A Violent Sport
No matter how much of a terrific humanitarian Tiger Jeet Singh is, his illustrious wrestling career will be at the root of his success. This may not bother some people, but it does others - especially for a Grade School - and we are merely asking they reserve the name for a high school.

2) Our Community
The deciding committee wants to increase the sense of community? How more proud (& accurate) can you get than Coates Crossing Public School?
Hawthorne Village has Hawthorne Village Public School; yet Coates Crossing gets the thumbs down. Seemed like the obvious winner. Very odd to say the least.

I really don't see how much more of a discussion can be had about this. Some agree with the decision, some don't. That's fine.

This has to be the silliest string in the history of the forum. Against the name of the school because it's difficut for young children to say...give me a break....I sell sea shells by the sea shore, peter piper picked a pickeled pepper.

It's a school, who cares that it was named after a 'Distinguished' member of the Milton community who has supported the town and other chariatable causes long before many of the people on this board have lived in Milton.

After all, what do children go to school for? I think that the primary purpose is to get an education and secondary to develop their social skills in relating to others. Just because it was named after a former wrestler do you think that the quality of education that your children receive will be low to non-existant? Come on, who are we kidding, this is purely naieve and prejudiced people and another case of 'NIMBY' and arm chair politicians.

I think the town should be congratulated for honoring a respected member of the community. After reading this stirng, I hope he doesnt get the wrong idea and begin believing that we do not appreciate all he has done in the past and continues to contribute to our 'Growing' community!

Thank you very much Kamato. I am so deeply offended by this (silly? prejudiced?) that it will be a long time before I participate in any discussions on Hawthorne Villager again. Just so you know, I live in a small house, with a small car & am living on mat leave benefits, but will be taking time today to make a donation of $ & supplies to a family in need here in Milton. That is the kind of person who you have just offended. :(

Suzanne

I was waiting for someone to cry "prejudiced". :P

I didn't read every response, so forgive me if this has already been stated BUT...if we have to name the school after this person, why are we not using his given name "Jagjit Singh Hans", rather than his "cage" name?
Seems ridiculous to me.

I would just like to thank Rick, Andrew and Mike to chime in and offer their view on this topic. I know this is a controversial topic and it takes courage to speak your mind but I am glad to see that we have some “straight-up” guys running for Councilors. We need regular guys like these to represent us rather than the “politically correct” type.

I think Rick summed it up well; if you can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen! :)

I honestly think it would be a better tribute to Mr. Singh if Milton dedicated a wing of a sports complex to him, say if the sports center had a wrestling area, and there could be a display case outlining his life, his humanitarian efforts, etc.

A little off the wall but consider this; if there was an Adult Entertainment star who lived in Milton, built their career up in the industry and went around the world speaking up about AIDS awareness, safe sex, drug abuse and who also participated in the Toy Drive would it be appropriate to name a school after said person? You have to judge a person based on everything they do, not just one aspect of it.

I am hoping that one day, Halifax names the Casino the Peter North Money Shot.

For those who don't know... he's from Halifax.

For what it's worth to everyone involved in this, I have apologized to Mr. Singh and his family and plan on working with them to make sure that our new school becomes the amazing place I know that it can be. The family and I both consider the matter closed. I sincerely hope we are able to turn frustration into understanding and compassion. At least, that is my wish.

I have read a lot of comments on here by people that care a great deal about the community that we raise our families in, and the friends we get to make along the way, and I respect every one of them. While there is never any shame in voicing our opinions about the things that we care passionately about, I've always believed if we have a change of heart about something - that we should be able to say it.

Sean, on behalf of the Singh family, thank-you for your apology regarding this matter.

It speaks highly of your personal character. Unfortunately, much as we all would like to think otherwise, not many would have so carefully -- and publicly -- reconsidered their position as you have. You are to be commended.

Tiger Jeet Singh, his family and the school look forward to working with Halton District School Board, the school community and you to create the kind of environment, beginning in September 2010, where attending children can receive high-quality academic and life learning.

Teachers, parents and students, complemented by Tiger Jeet Singh and his family where it is deemed appropriate, will forge a partnership to create Milton's next generation of academic and community leaders.

No doubt the rest of Milton will be watching with much interest, and perhaps with just a little bit of prideful envy.

These opportunities simply don't come along very often in the life of a community. You and your neighbours are very fortunate, indeed...

Thanks again -- and all the best with the new school!
