My husband and I are planning on buying more meat from actual farmers or butchers, to try and stay away from the genetically changed and altered meats in stores. Watched a movie on it over the weekend, totally grossed out now lol.

I'm not so worried about the organic side of it. Just more how the animals are raised and handled. What they are fed and so forth.

Can anyone recommend someone around the Milton area that sells the meat they raise.
I'm not looking for a full cow, more like I can do my regular meat shopping there weekly. For chicken and beef?

And anyone local to buy veggies from

Hi Theresa, my wife and I recently watched the same movie and had the same reaction.

We are buying our meat from Agram Farms (Trafalgar just s of 15 SDRD). THey raise their own and butcher it.

For veggies we go to Greenfields Organic farm (Guelph line s of 15 sdrd). They are certified organic, which means right now the stuff is alot of imported, but in season they grow their own. We are really happy with our decision so far. The food is much better tasting as well as being better for us and our kids and the environment. Also good for local economy.

I haven't been able to look at chicken the same since seeing this film.

On a similar note, does anyone know a good source for eggs from decently treated chickens? Organic doesn't really matter to me, I'm more interested in how the chickens are treated (ie allowed to actually be free range outside when the weather is appropriate, not 'free range in a barn' like some of the so-called supermarket free range eggs). I'd love to support a local farmer by being good quality eggs direct from the farm.

Good point as well, I want to support as many of our farmers as much as possible, and have animals better treated

Again I have to say go to Agram meats. They have "naturally raised" eggs (or eggs from naturally raised chickens) 30 for $7! That is better price than the supermarket for better eggs from a local farmer. Cant beat that.

There is a place on Derry Rd between Tremaine & Appleby across the Street from Springridge Farm. I have never used this place but I always see the sign on the road. I'm not sure of the name, but they have a sign "grain feed meat" out front, seems like they sell everything eggs to, but I'm not 100% sure.

It's close by if your interested.

I can't find on their website, do they say anywhere what exactly they mean by 'naturally raised' when it comes to their hens? Because that could mean almost anything, frankly.

justagirl, that's Bousfields, I keep meaning to stop in there to ask about their eggs and just haven't gotten around to it yet!

+1 for Agram meats. sometimes the selection is a bit limited, but the meat is good and very reasonable prices. I have also tried Fenwood Farms in Ancaster (also good) but more of a drive and a lot pricier.

This is a great thread. I've driven by Agram's and wondered about them - I'll have check them out. There are a few other local meat sellers along Steeles between here and Mississauga that I was also curious about. Can't remember the names. If anyone has info on them I'd really appreciate it.
