I work at the airport and I would arrive more than two hours before a US flight. Some days you can sail through and some, like the other day there was a two hour delay to clear customs for no apparent reason...you never know.
I would much rather grab a coffee at the gate and relax instead of worrying about making it through in time.

For a weekend flight you should be good just about 1:45min. For weekdays flights just budget 2.5 to 3 hours.

I took a late Sunday flight few weeks back and was done checking-in less than 1 hour, very leisurely. Flight got canceled after boarding due to weather and I had to go back Monday morning with a red eye flight. Boy what a difference! It still took me just about 2 hours though, just unbelievably crowded.

Our next vacation will NOT be flying to the USA for this reason alone. I am sick of paying that damned star spangled airport tax and having to go through that circus/theatre at the airport. What a joke.
