I get stuff dumped in the dumpsters at the store all the time and I have to pay to have them there. It cost me extra when I need to call for a pickup because one fills ahead of the regular pickup date.

On the other hand it doesn't cost just a few bucks to take things to the Halton Region Landfill Site. It cost me $38 last time I went and I didn't have much. I find this amount excessive and high enough that it may discourage some from properly disposing of their junk. The other thing I find stupid is that I once took an appliance there and they wanted to charge me to dump it when I can call the Region and they will come and pick it up at my house for free! Where's the logic in that?

Maybe we need to look at ways to encourage proper waste disposal (lower cost to dump, better pickup options?). Regardless there is no excuse for dumping on the side of the road or someone's private property. Some people are just slobs.

I think the problem is as simple as people just not knowing how to take stuff to the dump. If they've never been, they probably assume it's 30 kms out of town and that it's a huge complex process, when in fact, it's just DUMPING YOUR S**T.

I used to go to the dump on Waterloo quite often. I found it to be pretty cheap, unless the operator at the booth noticed the TV's or computer monitors hiding under the regular trash, then they ding you with something 4 or 5 times more than you expected to pay.

Electronics are free to dump now because of the ECO fee you pay when you buy new electronics (so no need to hide them under other stuff anymore) and so are recyclables and many household hazardous wastes.

It's mostly regular garbage that they charge for and if they think your load is over a certain amount they weigh you going in and out and you pay by the kilo. So apparently I had 266 kilos of junk that day which I find hard to believe so maybe the problem is that the scales are wrong!

You mean with all the Halton Region bulletins distributed door-to-door and full page ads in the local paper and dedicated web pages for the site (easily found by Google search) there are still people out there who don't know where the dump is and how to use it?

Each time I go to visit our building site, the construction dumpster outside has some illegally dumped crap in it.

Among the things I've noticed thrown in to it are a mattress, a baby stroller and a chest freezer.

When I was there on a Sunday last week, one of the occupants of a recently closed house near Yates & Cargill walked over in broad daylight with an arm load of moving waste and threw it on the ground in front of the dumpster which sits on our block.

I pretty sure you're allowed to dump your stuff in the dumpster when you first move in until garbage collection is organized for your street by the city.

I didn't know that. Excellent. I will make good use of this ability in August.

YUP.... its totally acceptable as long as regular pickup isnt setup yet. Even after pick up is established, bins are still spread throughout the development for the contractors to toss their garbage... you can sneak stuff in them too sometimes...

Perhaps things have changed, but the recommendation is always to take a car/wagon to the dump and not a SUV/truck. Its a flat $5 fee for a car to take whatever fun you have inside of it. So really for these people dumping things its only a 'couple of bucks'. I have a few things in my garage I need to get rid of so I'm just waiting for my dad to come out for a visit with his jetta wagon :) When we were moving we had tons of recycling to dump -- if your car is full of this, its free!

<3 the dump.

The fee structure is actually based upon weight. If you bring less than 50kg it's $5.00 and then it's $10.00 for loads over 50kg. Whenever I've been, it's always been pretty subjective and they've just eyed it up and charged me $10.

The south end of Yates @ Louis St Laurent, on both Yates and LSL is embarassing. I find it entirely appalling and disrespectful. My kids ask me about all the garbage when we ride our bikes by and I have to explain to them that some people have no respect (for their neighbours or for the environment).

I almost stopped today when I saw a suitcase, with what appeared to be a claim sticker from the most recent trip that the owner took. If it's still there next time I drive by I will be stopping to peel it off so that I can make a complaint to the town, while providing the name on the sticker. If you recently dumped some luggage on Yates near LSL, I suggest getting it by tomorrow morning.

Mattamy is responsible for the cleanup in the Yates/StLaurent area and they have done a piss poor job of the cleanup. The longer the stuff sits there, the more copycat dumping goes on. The people who do this are complete idiots. They leave their addresses on info on some of the stuff they dump. To be honest I dont think the town does anything EVEN when they get the info from complaints. I have spoken to Mattamy several times about this but they need a fire lit under them before they do anything! its a disgrace!!

I don't mind paying a fee to dump regular trash at the dump like appliances, etc but I found it hard to pay for a pile of plant stuff I cleaned out of the back yard.

I could have packed it up and wrapped it with a pretty ribbon and left it out on the boulevard for a month until the trash guy came to pick up the bundles but of course it would look like h*ll and maybe be spread around like it did once when some kids decided to use the bags for football. I had to walk around the street picking it all up and repack.

So I pack it all up, put it in the back of the pickup and head to the dump where they wanted me to pay for it, even though they pick it up for free.

Stuff they recycle and probably sell for mulch. I had a choice, empty the bags into the recycle pile or put the bags and plant stuff into the dumpsters at the dump - same price. Decided it was better use of my time to dump it in the dumpster - so much for recycle at the dump.

That is why people do the short cut and just dump it along the roadside. Wrong to do but tempting when you have to pay for something they pick up for free but you want to get rid of quicker and are willing to transport.

Maybe a bonfire next time.

The town does NOTHING to enforce the Bylaws on dumping that is why people do it. I dont really care if people dump soil or clippings on dirt lots that havent been developed. I realize that even that is illegal BUT its at least biodegradable. Its the Aholes that dump TVs and suitcases or the absolute genius that goes to the trouble to buy yardwaste bags, collects the yardwaste in the special bags then cannot wait for the pickup and dumps it onto the boulevard??? WTF?? Or the imbecile lazyass who dumps cardboard into a big pile instead of waiting for the recycling pickup for no apparent reason!! This weeks new arrival is a stainless steel BBQ just spread all over the curb on St. laurent. It just never stops and nothing is ever done!!

Thats the point. Nothing can be done. The town should pick it up if someone calls it in. end of story. its not like its a missing child or something. why do people lose sleep over this stuff?[/quote]

But thats the other point, the town and Mattamy are NOT picking it up! Why do they need to be asked to do so? They should be on it!

I was doing a search for information on how to report someone dumping garbage and couldn't find anything. (Hubby just saw a silver SUV dumping at LSL and Farmstead area). What's worse is they turned south on Bronte so these people were going past or close by the Dump anyway. We got the plate and would like to file a report. Does anyone know?

Found the by law on littering on the Town's site but no reporting process.
