most of the strawberries in the store are from local farms such as stonehaven and andrew's. they do business with foodland ontario.
i just mean there are cheaper local farmers i would rather support.
The local berries at Metro (hidden off in a corner, if they have any at all in stock when you go in) are priced at over $4.00/pint. Serious gouge! I haven't seen local berries in Foodport this year yet. Usually they carry them before anyone else. The low priced strawberries I've seen at Superstore and Metro are USA berries.
By all means, support as many of the local berry producers! Like I said, I happen to choose Andrews. Many go so Springridge. Some go to Stonehaven. Some go elsewhere! No doubt there's going to be price variation and there's going to be a few farms that are cheaper than where I choose to go. Good to have choices right?
Addendum: I was at Superstore today and they did have pints of local berries. The pints were $2.97 a piece. The pint weighed 0.5 lbs when I checked it on my kitchen scale. So, $5.94/lb at the store vs. $2.50 U-pick. If you buy a 1 litre container of berries pre-picked at Andrew's it's something along the lines of $4.25/lb.
