My recommendation would be to pick your strawberries at:

30th Annual Strawberry Fair
Saturday, June 26th, 2010
8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Milton Fairground

Its put all by the Milton District Hospital Auxiliary Fundraising Opportunities to support buying equipment at MDH

Best part is, you can pick your strawberries from cartons. Hows that for convenience. If memory serves, you can also enjoy with ice cream and cake
:D

Andrew's Scenic Acres! (They sponsor the Strawberry Festival). They have a longer growing season for strawberries than many farms. I was there on Monday and picked 7 litres (one large basket - available at the farm). I think it was $2.50/lb. I'll be going back. They said their season lasts into early July. The berries were delicious! The 7 litres made 6 250 ml jars of strawberry jam, and 6 containers of strawberry freezer jam, and a medium freezer bag of frozen berries, plus fresh berries for waffles 3 days in a row!

stonehaven and andrew's is way over priced. it;s cheaper to go to the store and buy them there for $2. $2.50/lb and i have to pick them?

you can go the big apple on heritage rd for 1/2 the price if you want to pick them yourself.

I don't like the US berries that sell in the grocery store for fire-sale prices. I find them fibrous and not very tasty compared to local berries.

I go to Andrew's because I like the farm, and I can get asparagus and rhubarb at the same time as the strawberries and I love their baked goods. To each their own. It's nice to have a good selection of local farms to choose from!

most of the strawberries in the store are from local farms such as stonehaven and andrew's. they do business with foodland ontario.

i just mean there are cheaper local farmers i would rather support.

The local berries at Metro (hidden off in a corner, if they have any at all in stock when you go in) are priced at over $4.00/pint. Serious gouge! I haven't seen local berries in Foodport this year yet. Usually they carry them before anyone else. The low priced strawberries I've seen at Superstore and Metro are USA berries.

By all means, support as many of the local berry producers! Like I said, I happen to choose Andrews. Many go so Springridge. Some go to Stonehaven. Some go elsewhere! No doubt there's going to be price variation and there's going to be a few farms that are cheaper than where I choose to go. Good to have choices right?

Addendum: I was at Superstore today and they did have pints of local berries. The pints were $2.97 a piece. The pint weighed 0.5 lbs when I checked it on my kitchen scale. So, $5.94/lb at the store vs. $2.50 U-pick. If you buy a 1 litre container of berries pre-picked at Andrew's it's something along the lines of $4.25/lb.
