--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've got neighbours a few doors down that spark up once in a while on their front porch. While I don't really think it's a big deal to smoke pot (I don't partake, and never have), it does piss me off that these are probably the same people who think I lower their property value because I don't mow my lawn as often as them.

Regardless if your "high" or not, I think most people can agree that a neighbour that does not cut their grass or take care of their property does lower everyone's property value.

Back to the original post... "i have an issue when my daughter whom is very young asks me what that smelly smoke"

I would just tell my kid, "It's a yucky cigar" and if I was that concerned about it, I would say "Lets go inside for a little while, we'll get a drink, and come back when the yucky cigar smell is finished"

Cigarette smoke is common enough where they might know you're lying if they're old enough and exposed enough, but with cigars / cigarillos / etc, the exposure is so infrequent, kids haven't got a clue.

Well Fred, I think that is the most rational thought on this tread.

Exaggeration aside, I don't think the poster was talking 2-3 inches of longer grass -- we're talking overgrown, weed-ridden, unkempt.

IN FACT... the semi I just sold - they take care of their lawn, but their neighbour's lawn was atrocious.
Buyers will pull into that driveway thinking - who will I be sharing a wall with? and will they ever help shovel the driveway?

So the day before they listed, I encouraged my client to go next door and offer to cut their front lawn, since theFor Sale sign will be going up the next day.
They kindly allowed him to, and the house sold in a week.

That doesn't mean anything definitive to me, other than no potential buyers were 'scared away' by the neighbours crazy lawn. All buyers are different. As a seller, if you don't do everything you can to appeal to the maximum number of people, you're doing yourself a disservice. You don't want to scare ANYBODY away with even the tiniest little thing that you COULD have controlled.

Right ... mowing your lawn every second week lowers your neighbours property value more than smoking a joint on the front porch in the middle of the afternoon.

Maybe I'm just delusional, or maybe my value system is screwed up, but a pot head smoking a joint on the front porch next door would actually convince me not to buy the house .... grass that is 2-3 inches longer next door would have no impact whatsoever.

I think if I was having an open house, it would be much easier to say to a neighbour to not "spark up" for a few hours rather than asking a neighbour to cut their grass and clean up their home for your open home.

The lesson learned is if you want your neighbours lawn nice and short, ring their doorbell and offer to do it for them.

Everyone is happy.

true that. An idea just dawned on me, how about naming your home wi-fi network something like "Cut your f**king grass 659 Scott Blvd" ?

FU*K THAT!!! if you own a house take pride in it....

Look at brampton?? why is Brampton so cheap compared to here?? b/c ppl dont take care of their houses there and most of them look like crap.

And I swear the more we have 20 families moving into a house the more our streets will look like Brampton

I agree with that for the most part, but its culture and makes good financial sense.

Not to mention all those freaky families having more than three kids! More than one person per bedroom! Despicable. We should steralize every couple after they hit the MDM quota.
