Maybe I confused you...
I was suggesting a westbound turn for northbound traffic off 4th Line at Derry. At present there is an island in the middle of the road which means you can only turn east. 4th Line, southbound at Derry will continue to be a cul de sac with no Derry Rd access.
Jan Mowbray

I am confused...I admit that - but not with your description.

The confusion I have is with why the north side is a closed off cul de sac, and the south side (which has the exact same physical make up) is an open built up road? Why the double standard? You can't call half of it a cul de sac, and the other half a main road.

Adding the turn lane, will only promote more people to use 4th line.

But I digress... this is a topic that has no real point being discussed anyway, as there is not much to change now. We're just spinning our wheels in the mud.

I do realize that - I'm just kinda venting today... maybe it's the weather :)

I do appreciate Milton's low property taxes for sure and realize everything is a trade-off.

The good thing is that Milton now has a decade of some truly brutal development issues to hopefully learn from as the Town continues to make decisions on future growth.

Quote:
I absolutely feel for commuters on the road issues facing Milton.
I'm told time and again that we can't build the roads ahead of getting the development charges from the developer. The only alternative is to borrow the money with interest which would increase property taxes. It's through the use of funds received through development charges that Milton's property taxes are second lowest in the GTA.

Actually, that's a good question. But overall it gets back to the Region's intent, that a full intersection at 4th Line is too close to the JSP. I don't know if you've watched traffic at the other intersections along Derry: drivers using the turn lane to go straight through, ignoring the lights, speeding - driver inattention with the increase in traffic would cause more accidents and if my memory serves me correctly, I believe there were quite a few in the area before it was closed.

In re-reading all these exchanges, I now recall why there is no left turn for northbound traffic off 4th Line at Derry;-)

Jan

A traffic light would have solved that problem.

There are intersections in Milton that have traffic lights that are far closer together than a potential JSP/4Line combination.

Yeah, but they've been there for a LONG time. You've got to go all the way back to ummmm... 2009 (LOL) Thomspon having 5 lit intersections within a few hundred metres.

My question is (and this is a valid question)... does our town have anybody with experience and traffic planning skills making these decisions, or is it all based on public input and the squeaky wheel syndrome? I don't mean to offend anybody, I'm actually curious. Light placement, left turn signals, and all the other things people have commented on in these forums. Is that all the engineering department? Perhaps they just have so much other work that the lights don't get the attention we'd expect?
Hey, one car = 10 seconds of left turn light while everybody else waits... seems like a default setting that was never customized possibly?

I understand how hard it can he to synchronize all the lights in town. In fact with 2 way traffic it would be a huge task, regardless of control of different levels of government.

But it can be made better in small sections. Today.

Lights that are very close together like the ones Fred mentioned on Thompson could be grouped together. Example: Childs and Nippissing. There should never be an instance where anyone stops at both of these lights, yet it happens on a regualr basis.

They should be tied together based on their proximity to each other. When one is green, so is the other, and vice versa when red. That is something that can be controlled at any single level of government, and would be a large stress relief to a lot of drivers.

Getting back to the main topic, a light at 4th line could be operated in the same way.

We hear excuses ALL the time, but it would be so easy to fix these 3 areas IN TOWN.

There is NO study required.
There is NO input required.
There is NO planning required.
Everyone already knows there is a problem - all it takes is someone to give me access to the switch and I'll fix it myself.

Pete is right. You can still have your advisory council in the long run if you want. But there are some very simple changes that can be made right away, that should not have been mistakes in the first place.

Infact, you have your advisory council right here.

Add: Childs Dr to Main St on hwy 25 as well. But I guess that is a regional cluster of tight lights.

I advise that THIS council is correct. Pete, Martin, well done.

Now one of us has to show up to a council meeting, voice our concern, wait, then wait some more, then more.
Then a little longer, then it gets considered. Then we invite the public within 150m of each intersection to comment, then it gets put on hold. Once the hold is lifted, if finally gets implemented but then overturned, like the No Stopping on Drew Ctr.
OR, they copme to an agreement to change the ruling, but prior to implementing, the cops are sent out to do a massive blitz based on the old rule, score huge, and then the change gets implemented the next day.

Fred D for council! (why are you not running?)

Not to tug on your campaign strings, Jan. But...

Imagine how great it would be if you could come to the villager and say: I've emailed Paul Cripps, and he will be looking at stretches of road in town where there are lights acting independently of each other in extreme close proximity, and will be progaming these clusters of lights to work together, so that you don't have to stop every 50 metres on certain stretches on road in town.

That's what you call votes.

Just tackle the easy stuff in stages, and before you know it, things will be better. If we wait to do the whole town at once, it will be 25 years before we start.

The lights at Childs and Nippissing on Thompson. Regional or municipal? (i'm not sure myself)

Also, good to have you here, Jan.

On another note, I thought the decision was made to change the lane designations at Main/Bronte. Meaning there'd be a left turn lane, and a straight-through/right turn lane. All this would take is an hour and a can of white and black paint, but has anything been done? Nope!

It is incredibly annoying that this has not been fixed yet. I remember seeing on here that it was supposed to be done this summer, before they were supposed to be putting in the temporary sidewalk from Scott on Main. (not started either) The intersection is downright dangerous with people driving straight through in the right turn lane when they are headed west on Main. And, you sit for ages at lights if you are heading north and trying to turn west on Main.

Thank very much for the update, Jan.

And thanks to Martin for using Google to find out which roads are regional in 45 seconds, for a task that has plaguing Engineering for a long time, since "Paul has been trying for years."
See, this is all we need. People to dedicate very small doses of time to take these seemingly large tasks looming over the towns head, and turn them into simple, manageable (achievable) ones, as Martin said.

For an issue to be years old and possibly solved by Martin using the Series of Tubes known as the interwebs, is a fabulous revelation. I know it's never as simple as that, but if council, current and future, allows us to step in and help prioritize, it makes everyone's job that much easier. They have too many issues (larger ones at that) to worry about these little ones.
Thanks again, Martin.
And Jan, another thanks for being involved on this thread, speaking to it last night, and posting quick replies. It's nice to have you on here, (assuming our occasional cynicism doesn't push you away - please, stick around!)

Together we can get things done!

I agree 100%. I think everyone on here that wants to provide input should absolutely have the guts to send an email or make a phone call telling you who they are, but without threat of losing their anonymity here on the villager.

Based on previous discussions, I know for a fact that one person on this thread providing useful input has spoken at council before (under real name and address). That aside, I also know how important internet anonymity and privacy is to the younger generation - I'm a little more lax with my contact info since I'm running a business, but I completely understand why people keep their information private on public web forums. Discussions can be anonymous, but I agree, action shouldn't.

If you have a list of 300 people you engage, I'd love to be on that list - as you can see, my real name and information is all here on the Villager.
If others wish to be added to your list, I encourage them to send their contact information to you directly.

I think you were directing this more to Fred, but figured I'd offer my 2 cents.

Does it really matter if the people are offering input in an anonymous fashion if the input is valid and useful? You say you have a list of 300 people you contact for input, is it fair that those 300 anonymous (to me) people are being used as spokespeople?

I think one of the reasons people come here to this site to post about issues, comments and concerns regarding the town is that many of us just don't know who to actually contact. I've tried looking things up on the Milton website and some information is so buried that its like trying to find a needle in two haystacks.

Thanks for everyones interest and posts.

Here is some information to clarify the numerous issues discussed on this thread.

For 727girl, the new pumping station on 4th line which is south of the new High school entrances will be connected through a new water line which will be built this fall down 4th line to Britannia, east along Britannia Road and then south on Trafalgar road. (see attached)

http://www.halton.ca/cms/one.aspx?porta ... geId=47938

For Martin Prince, I have been working with Heide and Ryan in the traffic section of the Town Engineering department over the past few months to work out a design for the intersection that can be located in this undersized location with left hand turning lanes on the existing pavement as the whole intersection will be upgraded in a few years for the widened Bronte St. N. construction. Staff plan on repainting the lanes in the next two weeks to be ready for the school year.

Regarding Derry road traffic lights staff are working on further improvements as there is three new lights to be installed in the next year at Savoline, Farmstead and Sauve which I raised last night regarding the Milton Mosaics application for 118 houses on the north side of Derry road. There will be further co-ordination of these lights as new traffic lights are tied into the system and the new underpass is built which Regional Chair Carr and I pushed forward to 2012 instead of the budgeted 2016 construction year.

Finally to give everyone some background that may not know Milton politics. I ran against the Mayor in 1997 the only current member of council ever to do so on a platform of improving Milton's well and stream based water system, as I could see what adding lake water development would do to Milton after seeing what happened to Mississauga and Brampton who lost control of their development.

The detailed subdivision designs for the Bristol Survey which is east of Thompson road and on both sides of Derry east of Highway #25, was not done until 1999 with the construction of the first phases starting in 2000. (check www.milton.ca for the reports) I was not an elected member of either council between December of 1997 and 2006 when the majority of the decisions and mistakes were made regarding Milton's development by the majority of other councillors and incumbant candidates.

I was elected in 2006 to both Local and Regional council for the wards 2 & 4 north of Derry road and work to serve all Milton and Halton residents. Over the past 4 years I have helped residents for all wards of Milton and Halton in resolving their concerns. As some posters may remember I worked with residents to stop the closing of Derry road for the bridge work east of 6th line which would have closed the road for 3-6 months which was stopped thanks to over 150 letters of support from residents on the villager.

The current regional councillor who sits on the Planning and Public Works committee at the Region is Barry Lee who has been on that commitee since 1991 and represents Wards 1 & 3 currently which is the majority of the new urban area south of Derry road. I have attended numerous public works committee and information meetings regarding issues in all parts of Milton and Halton and have raised residents concerns regarding a number of issues even though I do not sit on this committee.

While some candidates in this election talk about the issues I have been working with numerous residents and groups to deliver on their concerns and improve the community. You can check my 1000+ posts on the villager and other forums over the last 5 years informing and involving residents in the process of improving our community.

Looking forward to discussing more on this and other concerns.

Colin Best
Local & regional councillor
Candidate for Local & regional councillor
Wards 2,3,4,5. North of Derry road
