Hi Tim;

Can you PM me with some information regarding this system...I'm not quite a tech person, so I'm not familiar with some of the terms you described...is it like ExpressVu, kind of??

I'm interested to know price ranges, etc as well as what kind of system it is.... we had an ExpressVu package....."outside of Bell" :wink: But the card went down a while ago, and I'm hearing that the new solutions aren't that great.....

Thanks!
Jessica :)

FTA= Free To Air

In a nut shell, Direct TV and Dishnet scramble their satellite signals. that is why if you had a receiver you had to get your card updated with the latest hack. This breaking of the code is now illegal.

Free To Air is basically channels that still use satellites to broadcast, but are not encrypted or encoded, therefor there is no hacking or cards to access it. You just need the proper receiver. Still kind of grey market, but I believe it is 100% legal since you are not manipulating a signal to get your channels. Almost like the town not charging you for the light that enters your house from a street light at night.. It is free and travels freely in the air, just like these signals.

Make more sense??

I am investigating this but am not ready to jump on the band wagon just yet.

Matt

Thanks, Matt, that's great.

Sooooo....if I was to make a move from my illegal activity :lol: to this, it would be kind of essentially the same channels, service, or is it more like all of the US channels, like Direct TV??

Sorry technically challenged.... :oops:

under the Radiocomunications Act, it is illegal to manufacture, import, distribute, lease, offer for sale, sell, install, modify, operate, or posses any equipment capable of decoding a scrambled signal, unless you are paying for the signal through an authorized Canadian distributor. Consumers can face fines of up to $5,000 and/or up to 12 months in prision, while businesses face fines of up to $25,000.

For FTA you will need to download the “pirate” code to make it works.

My understanding is that this legislation does not apply to FTA. There is no dowmloading of the "Pirate code" This is not a card based system like DTV and Dishnet. You are pointing to a satellite that is using unscrambled Mpeg-2 video stream. No difference then rabbit ear antenna on a TV, but satellite based.
Since this Mpeg is unscrambled and the quality is lessened, the picture generally is not good on big screen TVs as the video feed is not as rich as the DTV, Dishnet scrambled signals are.

My quick research on the net tells me that this format is very large in the Pacific Rim where mountains and such interfer with publicly broad cast TV signals. SO they leave the signals open and people use dishes to connect to the free signals.

It is not illegal to use this to my knowledge.

Please, do not mix different things.
Some of the chanels are FREE TO AIR - it means Broadcasters (some State Televisions) are paying for Signal Providing, which is Up-Link to Sat, which will rebroadcast the open signal. At this case FTA is OK to use.

But these ones:
Pay Per Views :!: :!: :!:
Movie channels
Cartoons
Adults
Common, they are not FREE TO AIR. All of these signals are protected. They are not free.
To get them working for free, you have to get file which will "open" protecting codes. Or you have to pay for someone to get it done.

This is from:
http://www.tgdaily.com/2005/11/29/jessu ... itedishes/
Out of the box, the receivers can only receive free and unencrypted channels from certain news and government stations such as NASA. However, with the correct firmware and channel list file uploaded via an RS-232 serial port, users can watch thousands of encrypted channels. Satellite owners will often switch channels and re-encrypt the transmissions to frustrate owners of FTA boxes, but new firmware updates are generally released the same day on several pirate forums.

As far as I know...No. You have to get your own receiver and dish.

You can use any dish, it is the receiver that has the guts to make it work.

How much does a system cost? And when it says PPV's does that mean all PPV's are free and working at all times?
