Hello,

Just a quick question. Should I be getting some of the spray foam insulation to fill in where I have to cut out when installing my garage door opener?

Where did you cut out to install your garage opener?

If on the wall above to the door to mount the header, then probably not as that does not border living space.

If on the ceiling, then yes, as that borders living space.


Either way it won't hurt and the spray foam is pretty handy to have around for any other jobs that may require it.

thanks guys. i have not done it yet, we get our house this week, so i will be doing it on thursday. i will grab some to be safe.

If the garage was built with proper dimensions, you will not have to cut the ceiling.

But the header board must be secured directly to the wall structure, behind the drywall. About half the houses I work on have drywall above the doors, the other half just bare wood.

You are lucky. I had less than 2" clearance between my ceiling and the door when it moved up and down & had to modify my ceiling/drywall.

...and about half of the Mattamy houses I have worked on are in this same situation.. garage ceiling too low

And you know the stupid thing about that? They could have raised the ceiling ~8" without any problems. Unless it has something to do with air flow from the uninsulated front/roof portion to the insulated ceiling/floor?

Dude.. I have no idea what they are thinking when designing these things.. but I know they are _not_ thinking about the proper clearances for garage door openers. I am sure there is cost reason surrounding it.

I wonder if the issue is not how much room is above your head, but rather how much room isn’t below your feet!

I would imagine that the closer the garage parking pad and first floor level are two each other, the less ceiling room you would have in the garage. Maybe the two levels are made closer to facilitate the optional door from the garage to the house or just a result of the overall grading of the lot.

Tim and I have the same model home, though different elevations. When I look at some of the pictures on Tim’s website that show his garage floor, I see a lot less of the foundation wall exposed than in my garage. That is, the garage parking pad is nearer the top of the foundation wall than it is in my garage.

I have lots of clearance for a door opener, even though I have not had one installed yet. (Still waiting for the Blow-Out Sale at Sears)

I was at Sears on the weekend and they had some good deals...$100 off on some models.

My grading is different for sure. Our porch does not have a step in the pad, I also do not have the lowered door to the garage near the washroom. I wonder if this effected my garage door ceiling height as you said Matteo... you should see how much clearance there is between the top of the main garage door to the ceiling!
