Just wondering what people's thoughts/experiences are on the various prenatal classes out there.

We were thinking of taking the one at the Midwife centre in Georgetown, since I'm a patient there. We're delivering at Trillium though.

I think prenatal classes are a great idea - not all area created equal though. Some are more focused on medical interventions while other prepare for a more natural birth. I know several great prenatal teachers. Feel free to PM me with the details of where you are or call me and we can chat.

I also teach prenatal yoga which focuses on the mental and physical preparations for birth and I bring in my experience as a doula. This, in my experience, is extremely beneficial and complements the knowledge that you would get from a prenatal education class.

Best of luck!

I think it depends on the individual. I've gone through 4 pregnancies and I decided not to take prenatal classes.

If your looking for the whole experience with your partner then I would say go for it. Some people do it because they want to be prepared for the birth. IMO, for myself anyway, I wasn't going to remember to breath the way they teach you and so on. Every birthing experience is different and your going to do what you need to do in order to make yourself feel more comfortable.

I think the prenatal yoga is a good idea... practice with deep breathing and stretching muscles is great for a pregnancy.

Not all classes are "lamaze". (Breathing)
The one offered by Halton Region at MDH is more about overall preparedness. Safety gates, what to expect for the duration of the pregnancy, how the birth will go (Usually), what's "normal" during development, etc.
It's also a quick and easy way to meet other parents and make friends with them. (Since you'll have a lot in common and similar aged kids.)
Granted, you can do the "meet and greet" stuff afterwards at all the mom/tot stuff offered all over town.
