Sounds like you lost your serpentine belt.
It drives your alternator - which is why the battery light came on if it stopped working.
It drives your power steering pump - Which would be why you lost it,
and it also drives your water pump, which is why it would get hot.

It also probably drives your AC...

It shouldn't cost too much. A new belt is $100 or so and it is easy to install. Shouldn't be more than an hour.

Good luck...

Yep, I'm with jambel; sounds like a belt snapped, which is unusual for a vehicle that only has 57K on it. Did you hear floppy sounds when you limped into the parking lot (from the broken belt), or did the Jeep make funny metal rubbing noises days before it broke down?

If they try to rip you off and replace your alternator which likely isn't necessary, ask them how they tested it and ask to get a print-out of a charging system report. Hopefully it's just the belt, or at worst, maybe a tensioner pulley bearing seized and ate up the belt, which would require replacing the pulley replacement too. Good luck.

Pretty ignorant comment. I'm sure that will really help the OP out.

In all seriousness, it's most likely your serpentine belt. Not sure how your engine is set up, sometimes you can just buy it and replace it yourself.

Same thing happend to my Ford, serpentine belt came off, the belt was still ok, it was the tensioner that needed to be replaced.

So did I. Used to work for Ford and got every Ford joke ever thought up. Still getting them since I have a variety of "Ford" emblazoned products.

I didn't even realize that, a pulley may have come loose.

Something that may help you: My friend with a 2010 Caravan, after having it for a week brand new, the alternator fell off. It turns out they only bolted 2/3 bolts, and 1/2 bolts were only in halfway, resulting in the alternator falling off in Niagara falls on the QEW. Your Jeep should still be under warranty, just take it to the dealer.

Actually it wasn't an ignorant comment. Growing up, I dealt with many Chrysler products that my parents purchased, and in the recent past I have had many friends/family deal with them as well. So no, I'm not ignorant to the problems with Chrysler products, I'd say I'm quite well versed.

As to helping the OP out, I thought the serpentine belt was probably the culprit or at least the first place to look so I though the issue was resolved. I bumped the post, and my comment cause others to bump it as well, which would lead to greater visibility of the post in case someone has an alternate suggestion or to have more people confirm.

And I wasn't trolling. Merely making a joke. Glad some people appreciated it. If someone wants to crack a joke about my Honda being a torque-less wonder ... I'd probably laugh along with them.

Hey man, didn't mean any offence. Just meant it's not really helping this person out. If that were my new car that just broke, I wouldn't appreciate it. Trust me, I love making fun of domestics, I do so on a daily basis; and of Honda's as well :)

Ford Edge. It's got a huge back seat. I had an '07 and loved it - and the new ones are even better.

It's a Chrysler product.

I'm not sure what you mean by "side by side", but we just got a Subaru Forester, and it has lots of room in the back seat (which recline, for when adults are back there instead of car seats) and lots of room in the boot.

I would emphatically second that.

I'm surprised they did the timing belt.

The Honda Pilot would be a good choice, or if you're looking for an SUV about the size of the Liberty, try the Ford Escape.

57000km  How did you make it that far
My Charger lost the engine at 7000km and again at 14000km and the engine had to be reflushed at 20000km. I gave it up and lost $30000 in the transaction. (Bought for $43000 and sold for $11000 9 months later)

What I mean is having 2 carseats right beside each other and not one on each doors side. I would hate to lose the middle space.
I will look at the Ford Edge.

Ok then the forester is out. The middle seat doesn't have car seat anchors, and is not recommended for them using the belt. However, it's roomy enough to have a car seat in the two door seats, and fit a good size dog in the middle, or a small sized person.

Better to just look for a bigger vehicle though. Stay away from the cute-utes and other crossovers. Or look into a wagon. V50 and V70 volvos are awesome and have lots of backseat room.

I know, no one likes wagons. Makes me sad :(
