Is anyone else out there as annoyed as I am about those unsightly huge basketball hoops that people put out front of their homes...they look tacky. And why is it that so many of today's parents think this is acceptable? They are usually not on the owner's private property, which is bad enough, but on the street or sidewalk? These are public areas.
Do you really want to be sued because you run over someone's kid who is playing basketball or hockey in the streets?
Why is it that kids aren't taught to respect other's space? Parents today are more concerned with spoiling them rotten then teaching them this.
Everyone who lives here has a private yard, driveway and access to parks where their kids can play. This was good enough for us when we were kids, so why do parents today think they have a right to impose their kids on everyone, everywhere?
Oh, I forgot....setting limits might damage their creativity and self-esteem...lol......

oh boy.....so today this is my battle.

I will try very hard to stay calm here.

Perhaps some questions for perspective.....

Would you rather children lock themselves up in front of a TV and become over 300lbs obese and unhealthy??

Would you rather these children take to the streets up to no good and into trouble, so that there is damage to the community and gang violence, etc. etc??

You mention a lawsuit if you hit a child that is playing road hockey....are you one of the idiots that whips along residential streets, around corners, etc. with no regard to other people or their safety??

I really don't think that a hockey net, or a basketball net will affect your quality of life, or the view you have out your window.

Perhaps you should really rethink things, and pick another battle, one that has more importance in life than a hockey net being on or very close to someone's property. There are much worse things in life to worry about than a child enjoying their childhood....

If I wanted to end with one last catty comment, if I was your neighbor, I would make a valiant effort to be outside even more often.

Do you disagree with pedestrians rollerblading down the street, or riding their bikes??

Maybe a comment like that, I should send one of my son's hockey teams with some toilet paper and eggs to your house.... they could teach you a little on teamwork and comradery. (KIDDING)

But in all seriousness.....COME ON!!!!!

Jessica :)

I so agree with you Jessica,

Give me a break...unsightly??? It's not like there are clothes lines criss crossing from one residence to another with fire hydrants busted pouring out water into the streets like in the Bronx. Or that we have to worry about syringes and condoms being left in your alley ways between houses. My gosh....it's a basketball/hockey net. AND yes they have been around for decades, I use to play street hockey till the street lights came on....it's tradition! This is a community with growing families, which means, strollers, wagons, bikes, skateboards, rollerblades, dogs and children playing on their street. What is wrong with that. AND to put down the parents.....what is that about? Oh I get it...let's just send our children to the mall to hang out...yah that's it.... Much more safer THERE!

Just watch out for them ! gimme a break! They're kids! It's not like they're up to no good. I think a lot of us moved to Milton to have that kind of security for our kids.

Sorry, I just had to vent that out. :)

The only thing that annoys me about the basket ball nets are when they are damaged and not repaired. You do not leave your broken washer on the lawn, so why leave your broken net.

What gets me is that I would be more concerned about my kids playing on the street, let alone what they are playing with on the street. When I played on the street when I was younger, the houses were further apart, had adequate driveways and the speed was respected more. I will never let my kids play on the street in this elvoving shrinking neighbourhood.

I for one want my kids to get out of the house and play and not sit in front a TV and veg out, although it is nice not to hear them screaming and yelling

So if getting them out means having a basketball net by the side of the road. Then I'm for it, I'd just be out there playing with them and making sure they don't get hit by stupid people speeding down a subdivision road because they need to get home a couple seconds faster.

Something like some guy barrelling down the 401 at neck break speed who you meet up with at a exit stop light...does that make any sense?

Let the kids play and have a good time, by the time their all grown up, the net will be gone, but satalite dishes will remain.

Tim

I still think we need HV to be a golf cart community!! I will drive the beer cart on weekends, then cars will not be an issue anymore!

I'm all for kids to go out and socialize with other kids on the street. Mine are small for a big basketball net, I have small one that I put back inside the garage when done.

The only thing that anoys me is the peole that live the big basketball nets on the street all the time, rather than the driveway.

OK....so most of that was me. I was joking about some of the things, and by being ridiculous, I just wanted to hopefully point out how completely ridiculous your comments were.

I really don't think that eggs and toilet paper would damage your house....it was built by Mattamy after all....

I suppose I should lighten up when speaking with someone who obviously can't understand fun, children, and play.

However, as for the values I am instilling in my children.....don't go there. I speak of my 10yr old, as my younger 2 are too young, however, he is the most mature, responsible kid I know. He amazes me everyday. He is extremely smart, bright, and thoughtful. Some of the thoughtful things he has considered have made me full out cry, and that takes a bit. Balancing all of this, he is outgoing, has a great sense of humour, and is athletic.

I like to believe that I have something to do with these traits.

However, on a daily basis, I continue to show him how to deal with ignorance, tolerance, patience, and just blatant unhappy, grouchy people, who in contrast with my son, just don't know how to enjoy life, and make it their goals making others miserable, and trying to dampen people's spirits.

I thank you, as I will let my son read this thread, so that we can give him an example of how someone like you displays these traits.

I will leave his opinion of you up to him...and reserve my own....but I'm sure he, as have others on this form, will take the high road....and agree just to let this be now....and just come to terms that the world is full of different people, and ultimately.....you have to deal with that.

Lesson learned.

Jessica :)
