used disposable for my first 4 and didn't have any issues, and couldn't justify the money on a special garbage system for them. If it was a really dirty diaper, we put it in an old grocery bag, milk bag or something and put it in the garbage, and then when full, out to the garage. No smell issues.

If you are breastfeeding, your poops will not smell nearly as bad...that could be something to consider as well.....

We use cloth diapers this time around, and LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE them. We use BumGenius, AppleCheeks, AMP and Bummis.

I actually have some for sale in the smaller sizes that we have recently grown out of, if you would like to try them out to see if it is for you.

Extremely economical, not a lot of work, and no stink at all. I can't recommend them more.

(If you are interested in the diapers, PM me, it's not gross, I swear, they are immaculate, I have a bit of an obsession with them and bought wayyy too many, so most are hardly used, and I wash them meticulously...I have issues! LOL)

Hi ladies,
I'm expecting with my first due on May 1st & I'm seriously considering cloth diapers.
My hubby & some friends think I'm crazy but after reading some of your posts it helps to confirm that this may be the way to go.
Any recomendations ?! I'm thinking a service that picks up weekly but I also saw some adorable cloth diapers at Snuggle Bugz this week.
I might start a new thread on cloth diapering :D

if you have any questions at all, let me know, I'd be happy to help!

I don't recommend a service...it just wasn't for me. I bought my own and it created one load of wash about every 5 days for me. I can go longer if I need to....(I bought too many!!). And it isn't inconvenient (trust me, as I'm in a rink almost all day long and on the go....). Once you find a "system" that works for you, I actually love it compared with disposables. I only wish I knew/tried cloth diapers with my others.

Don't take this offensively about your critics...but normally I have found that those around me that thought I was crazy just weren't as educated as the "new" cloth diapers as they could be. DH was NOT on board, now he loves them as well. They aren't a disgusting, smelly mess. TRUST ME! LOL I have 5 kids...I don't have time for BS, and cloth is definately my preferance :)

What's the gist of washing Cloth diapers - my wife has to do it not me. If I set her up properly she might be willing.

You can use your green bin to soak your clothe diaper's too. It will fit perfect beside your toilet, closes tight till you deposit your next diaper... but you must use toilet to rinse first. Then the sucker has wheels to drag to your laundry roam... See that thing is useful for everything  Finally our tax dollars managed to make something useful, you just have to use your imgination

Do you fill up your greenbin with a liquid solution to soak? If you are alone how do you shake off the poop with baby in hand?

Don't know I used disposables!

Just goofing around with my Green bin idea's :D

I do recall my mother would put the clothe diaper in toilet and leave it there, she would rinse it later when she had time.

Well I'm not a Lady, but I do know a bit about cloth diapers. I'm probably the only men out there that was trying to convince his wife to use them! :)
We did buy ours from Snuggle Bugz and as I said before we got the all-in-one BumGenius. That was the only way I could convince my wife to use them because it works almost the same like a pampers, the other deal was that I had to wash them and put the liners in them. :) But after a little while she noticed that it's not that much work and started helping me out.

The only thing I don't like about these diapers is that they take too long to dry as oppose to the ones that have the cover separate from the liner. We was ours every two days because we only bought 17 of each size. They are pretty expensive.

If you do go with the all-in-ones I would skip the XS size that they have. Your baby will outgrow it in a matter of weeks. If you have any other questions let me know. :)

I use Motherease one-size. LOVE them - especially now with the second child I see the big payoff. Now that we're into solid foods I use disposable liners that I dip in the toilet to rinse off then toss in a trash bag. I discovered that "flushable" liners and wipes aren't really flushable as marketted and can cause problems in the your home sewer pipes and in municipal sewer pipes so I stopped flushing them.

For washing I just put them in a pail with water & vinegar and soak them until the pail is full. Then I just dump the water into the laundry sink and transfer the diapers into the washing machine. Front loader, whitest white cycle, extra rinse. Then into dryer or on the clothes line in the summer. Dead simple. You can "dry pail" too - same as above except no water and a pail liner in the pail. I did that with my first child. It was neat because you could pull the diapers out of the pail with the pail liner, turn it inside out into the washer without touching the dirty diapers :) . I'm just experimenting with a wet pail this time to see if there's odour control and stain control advantages.

I recommend talking to Steph from Baby Wearing Boutique. She's a local home based business with a really wide selection of cloth diapers. She offers packages to try out different kinds and is a real wealth of information to help tailor a system for your particular needs. She also does seminars frequently. I like Snugglebugz for lots of things, but hands down would go to Steph for this kind of info and for the best selection.

Paul_W if you're the one washing them what does wifey do with the p00py diapers during the day?

Does she rinse them off for you? Or just throw them somewhere?

I didn't want to get one but since garbage pick-up is every 2 weeks and soiled diapers can't go in the green bin like other municipalities i gave in to the diaper genie...

You can ask the region to do collection every week if you have diapers in your trash.

Don't quote me, but I think they sell diaper liners. It's kinda like toilet paper. You place on strip in the diaper when the baby poops, the liner catches it, you then flush the liner and poop, deposit diaper in pail.

In talking to one of the engineers at Halton Waste Treatment, "flushable" liners and wipes actually can wreak havoc on your home sewer pipes (clog them, cause back-ups), and also on the municipal system. They can block screens and wreak havoc with pumps. The liners are more like fabric than toilet paper. Tough to rip. The test I was told was if they were harder to tear than toilet paper, they should not be flushed. With my first son I managed to find a septic safe, 100% biodegradable liner - but I had to import them from a company in California. OK when I could ship them to Niagara Falls, NY and have hubby pick them up on a regular cross-boarder business trip and avoid duty and extra time and shipping cost to ship them here. I can't be bothered this time and am using Bummis disposable diaper liners. I dip the soiled ones in the toilet, flush the nasties, then toss the liner in a garbage bag.

Cloth wipes are also a great saving and clean up baby better than disposable wipes. I toss them in my diaper pail with the diapers.

Steph closed up :( But I'm sure if you called she would always provide helpful advice.

You don't have to soak your diapers. I use what is called a "wet bag". It's essentially a waterproof bag with a zipper. Take out the insert, toss it into the bag, smell is zipped in, throw in the cover when you're ready as well.

When you want to wash them, literally take that bag to the washer, dump them in, as you're dumping them in, allow the bag to go inside out, and throw it in too. Use special detergent (I use Rockin Green). I use 2 or 3 rinses, as I have a front loader and can't adjust the water, and then do a regular wash. You can throw them in the dryer or hang to dry. No fabric softeners, no bleach.

VERY VERY VERY easy.

If you breastfeed, you do NOT need to rinse the poo out of the diapers, it is water soluable and won't hurt your washer.

When you start solids or if you formula feed, there are liners with the consistency of toilet paper that you lie on top of the diaper, (kind of like a maxi pad! :) ) and you flush it.

Easy. Done.

When people start thinking about having stinky wet diapers soaking in pails and hands on in crap rinsing and taking them out of pails to put into the washer, that's where no one wants to "sign up". Honestly, it's as easy as how I described.

The diapers themselves mostly work like disposables. There are no pins or fancy wrapping or folding.

There are some kinds of diapers that are cheaper than others, etc. etc. That part is preference and is up to you

Hope this helps :)

Jessica :)
