Councillor Lambert and I both got emails today from concerned residents about the large blue clothing collection box that had been placed on Trudeau Drive by the entrance to the Milton Pipeline Trail. It was placed without permission and the Town's By-Law enforcement folks are taking care of its removal! Thanks for the "heads up".

Sharon

You got another one on Main and Thompson (near the kitchen and bath store). and it's blue too.

Thank you for updating everyone Cllr. Barkley. A few of these boxes have popped up in town over the last few days. By-law enforcement will remove the box if it is on town property. Thanks Buka for the head's up, I will ask by-law enforcement to remove it also.

Best,
Tony Lambert

When you guys say illegal, is it cause they didnt get a permit from the town, or is it some new 'mob' way to make money? Are the police involved? Will we see something similar on CSI Miami in the coming months?

Hi Richard&Liz,

The boxes were put around town without the permission of the town. By-law enforcement has the authority to have the boxes removed if placed on town property so no CSI Miami episode in the works.

Is it an individual looking to get free clothes to sell on the streets or is this a company that is not playing by the rules?

There's one on Scott across from Escapment View school, too.

Hi SQ8RMOM,

Thank you. I heard there were 3 boxes that came to our town this is the third. I will have by-law enforcement visit/remove this box also. This should deter future pop up clothing boxes without town approval in the future.

Best,
Tony Lambert

Apparently there are a number that by-law enforcement is now aware of and they are working on removal of any on town property, road allowances etc. Apparently Mississauga had a similar problem.

Is this a real and urgent issue? If the bins are are for a charity, can we contact them and have them apply proper process? If it's being done for profit somehow then it's a different scenario.

If it's an "enforce the by-law" issue, then you need to be consistent as many by-laws are not enforced. I know of at least 1 councillor who did not remove their election campaign signs as per by-law requirement. That was never followed up or enforced. Suddenly we're following up on by-laws? Are their by-laws about basement apartments meeting town inspector standards for health and safety reasons? Cuz that's never enforced. What about parking on street aprons and obscuring visibility of oncoming traffic? How many times do I need to call in and complain? The guy knows all he'll get is a warning. When I get hit by an on coming car, I'm going to get a record of all my complaints and then get a lawyer.

Ms Barkley, it's great to actually feel your presence here but is this what you want to be remembered for? Hunting down illegal clothing bins? Wouldn't it be better to let us know how you've been working towards that very impressive "As your councillor I would..." list on your website?

Many of these bins are typically put there by unscrupulous people - not charities. I knew someone (at a distance) who made his living gathering donated clothes, then selling them by the pound overseas in Africa and the like.

Free clothes = more profits for these companies.

Yea I saw the one across from PL Robertson school this morning at 730am, wasn't there yesterday morning.

I thought to myself, there's no way that was placed rightfully so. Boxes like this are usually placed in plazas not off residential streets. Made me feel like our area was ghetto. Glad someone is doing something about them, it's likely someone trying to make some $$$.

Based on this thread, the best way to deal with your neighbourhood parking bylaw issues would be to smash open one of the car windows and spray paint "Clothing Collection" on the door. That'll get the car...er..."Donation Box"...towed away in no time...
