I'm in NE Milton near Thompson and Main. I get what looks like dark deposits (mineral formations ?) at the waterline in my toilet bowls every few days, especially noticeable in a bathroom that I seldom use. It comes off easily enough with a toilet brush but I've never seen this before.

Is Milton water known to be hard ? I don't have a water softener in my house.

Is anyone else getting this ?

Hi Hughd

If you live west of Thompson in the pre 2000 era Milton area bounded by Thompson, Steeles, Bronte and Derry road you are on well based water which is hard and I would recommend a water softener. If you live east of Thompson you are on lake water which is softer. There maybe a problem with your pipes which may be causing these black marks as I have not heard of any other situations like yours.

Possibly the Halton Home inspector can also give you some advice. If anyone else is having this problem please email or call me and I can get Regional water staff to investigate.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm on the east side of Thompson. I don't have any of the usual hard water issues like slipperiness or inability to get soap suds.
I first thought it might have been the black rubber flapper in the toilet breaking down but I changed them all and I'm still getting the residue/deposits.

I am in the same area - east of Thompson, north of Main. I get the SAME deposits on my toilets. I have never seen them in any previous homes in Mississauga or Brampton. I would love to know the cause of this.

Thanks for the information ccuthbert

Will pass on both your concerns to regional water services staff to review with you and remedy the situation, as is shows it is not just one house. If anyone else has similar concerns please email me or pm me.

We've had this for 5 years. I think it's actually a bacteria.

We are at Holly&Derry. We also have this dark buildup in the guest bathroom (which we don't use). I, too, think it's either mildew or some sort of bacteria from the stale water.

Us to. I find that our dishwasher has a hard time completely dissolving soap, we get calcium buildup in our kettle and even hose nozzle in the garage. I will be putting in a water softener as soon as we can afford to!

I live east of Thompson and this happens in all three of my bathrooms. We figured it was mould or something.

We use those Scrubbing Bubbles gel toilet bowl things and they seem to work great at preventing it. Downfall is it can be expensive to replace those every few weeks...more often if you have kids (which we don't)
