I want to do some volunteering in town. Anybody know what areas could really use some help? The hospital? I applied to volunteer at the Credit Valley Hospital but found out that it's like trying to get a prized job position...I'll be lucky if I hear back from them in like 6-8 months. Thanks.

You can check out this website:

There's also a wealth of social service organizations and service groups that could use volunteers or members for projects and services around the community:

Salvation Army
United Way Milton
Canada Day Committee
Santa Claus Parade Committee
Rotary Club
Kinsmen Club
Optomist Club
Lions Club

Ah, you beat me to it. :)

There are a lot of organizations in town that need help especially the Canada Day Committee which usually starts organizing the next years event the day after the other one is cleaned up.

Sometimes all it take is just a couple of hours a week to make a huge difference.

What kind of stuff does the Rotary Club do? Do they meet as a 'club' per se and organize fundraisers, etc?

Thank you so much for taking some time out of your life to help others. It is the greatest gift someone can give. You will make a difference no matter where you decide to volunteer.

Rotary club does do amazing things. They are the people who gave us the polio shot (this was not done by our government) They really do amazing thing around the world. They are a world wide club, they have clubs in almost every country. If you like I can introduce you to the Rotary, they do fund raising for local charities and also large disaster around the world. The thing I have seen Rotary do is truly amazing. Once inside the rotary, the one club will break down into many small groups, one group may be working on helping with local children, while another group is working on a raising funds for a world wide disaster, the core group will always be working on lobster fest, rib fest to raise money for various charities. They are a very active group I have seen local team members go to other countries to dig wells for clean drinking water in small villages. This is a great group to join.

If you are looking for something more one on one, children aid society is looking for volunteers to help in all sorts of area's. Not only foster children, They need people to drive the children to and from foster care. They need mentors for the children, they need people just to take the children to the park. They paper work completed, phones answered... there are so many positions that is available in Haltons CAS. You can pick up a brochure at the Milton Sports center they have them on display by the new pool. The brochure this so many volunteer opportunities within.

Or you can check out this web site

Good luck in your adventure, pick something that truly tugs at your soul and your will reap the benefits Enjoy :)

I have not personally been to a Rotary meeting, but I understand they meet weekly - I think at the Best Western - and they organize a variety of fundraising events. The Spring Fling dance, an On-line auction in partnership with Oakville clubs are two of their biggest fundraisers. They also do fundraising through food service offerings at things like Canada Day, Milton Street festival. Last year they raised 11,000 for Darling Home for Kids to kick start their fundraising for a fully wheelchair accessible playground, they also fund scholarships for Milton kids, The Deck drop-in center for youth and many other projects around town.

Thanks csb101 for offering to volunteer.

As mentioned by others on this thread there is a number of groups that need volunteers. You can check out the Town fall and winter leisure services guide for more information on community groups and activities in the area with new ones forming every year.

I know the Milton Santa Claus parade committee can always use more volunteers on Parade day this Sunday at 2 pm to help with the assembly area, parade marshals and other duties. Check their website at:

Hi csb101,

Thanks for offerring your time to assist our community. As Colin said, the Santa Claus parade committee could use some help this Sunday. Also as was mentioned earlier the best place to see volunteer opportunities is Volunteer Halton. I personally know that the Heart & Stroke Foundation for example are looking for assistance between now and leading up to their big month in February.

Best,

I'm the Volunteer Coordinator with the Canada Day Committee, and we're looking for volunteers for setup the week leading up to Canada Day, the day of the event, and for cleanup the day after.

Volunteers get a T-shirt, and free meal after their shift. For detailed descriptions of the positions either PM me through the board with your email address and I'll send you a list- or email miltoncanadadayvolunteer@gmail.com. High school students are eligible for volunteer hours, so it makes this a perfect fit for them.

We'd also welcome any new members to at the committee level. Our meetings are every third Wednesday in one of the meeting rooms at the Milton Sports Centre at 7pm.

Thanks all...I ended up going with giving blood and helping out with the cancer society. Two areas I feel passionate about. :)
