Proposed Velodrome for Milton

The proposed velodrome is a 250 metre oval cycling track with banked corners and 1500 permanent seats. In addition to the cycling track, the facility will also provide the community with access to recreations spaces that are non-cycling related. The infield portion of the track is large enough to hold the equivalent of three regulation size basketball courts and can be used for many different activities and events. Other potential spaces in the building could include a fitness centre, walking/jogging track and other associated amenities.

In keeping with our committment to hearing from residents on important issues that we face, the Town of Milton is looking for your input on the possible velodrome proposal that is coming up for councils review later this month.

This effort accomplishes two things. One is to get the all important feedback from residents on the direction of the town and second is to clear up any questions you may have about it. Its no secret that I have been a supporter of the idea as well as getting more information on the velodromes potential, its costs and the long term impact on the town of Milton. I am not 100 per cent on board with this until we “get the numbers”.

I was supportive of the project with the caveat that the impact on Milton taxpayers be minimal to zero (with no impact being my goal) from day one. I beleive that with this project in place, it will kick start the much needed approval for the Milton Education Village / Laurier University campus on the west side of town. Town of Milton seeks community input on Velodrome
The Town of Milton invites the community to provide input on the proposed Velodrome through the Town’s website, http://www.milton.ca.

In December 2011, Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games announced Milton as the preferred site for the Velodrome. A business plan is scheduled to be presented to Council on January 23, 2012 after which Council will decide whether or not to proceed with the Velodrome and hosting the Pan/Parapan Am Games.

“We are looking forward to learning from members of the Milton community how this major facility can best meet their recreational needs,” said Town of Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “I encourage everyone to visit our website to find out more about this proposed facility and what it can mean for the Milton community.”

The Velodrome webpage will include information on location, funding, timelines, as well as plans for the Velodrome after the Pan/Parapan Am Games. Public input and comments are invited to be submitted through the webpage and will be accepted until January 18, 2012.

Don’t forget, the reason we are this far down the waxed velodrome slope is that, at 2 previous council meetings, councillors spoke and voted in favour of proceeding with the evaluation provided that:
a. The campus would be approved by the province before a Milton commitment to the velodrome.
b. There would be no cost to taxpayers.
Those should remain the criteria for a council decision on January 23.

Mike, I appreciate your enthusiasm but you are representing the taxpayers of Milton. Some may share your enthusiasm if the velodrome is truly “free”. If taxpayer money is required, or a significant risk of same, I believe there would be very little enthusiasm from the majority who would have to pay. If given a choice they would probably prefer any extra taxes go for a needed program like the hospital expansion. Or if the town is really into high-risk exotics perhaps taxpayers would prefer a zoo, aquarium, pro football stadium, airport, town golf course, planetarium, botanical garden, horse facility like Spruce Meadows, etc. over a velodrome.

Please read the staff report to your tax-sensitive daughter and let us know if she cries.

God help us if there are more Malboeufs!! They'll pave everything over with concrete and charge us tolls to pay for the up keep!!!!

I would love to see a firm campus commitment but I think there's a snowball's chance in hell of that happening before the Jan deadline.

I'd like to see more details about revenue opportunities from the infield space and where that information comes from, and overall operating cost projections.

Thats Canada Post's definition for some of the north Burlington area. Most of Milton north of the 15th side road is located at R.R. #2 Rockwood and some of Halton Hills rural areas are also listed as Milton for Canada Post delivery.

Here is the Airport's website for more information and their expansion work. Bell School line is the boundary road between Milton and Burlington from #2 side road north to Derry road. The airport is located on the west side of the road south of Britannia road.

Perhaps I have missed it somewhere in the posts or papers that have been presented at Council but has there been any discussion on what is included in the PanAm cap on capital cost of $45 million. Much has been made of the fact that this is going to be a multipurpose velodrome with many ideas in what could or may be provided in addition to the cycling facility but I haven't seen any discussion on the costs of making it multi purpose and the ongoing operating costs of this.

Will this "incremental", and I assume it will be incremental, (after all there is no such thing as a free lunch) cost be covered by both the PanAm games Capital budget and the ongoing "legacy fund"?

Also I think it is a given that we will not hear of any approval for MEV before Jan 24 - anyone disagree with that assumption? I presume that the business plan will take into account the building of infrastructure for the velodrome ahead of its required timeframe for the MEV and the opportunity cost of advancing that Capital budget.

I have to confess I also find it a little disingenuous asking for public input less than two weeks before the plan is due to be presented. At least in the private sector I would expect the plan to be close to finalisation at this point in the schedule. Oh well better late than never!
