why would you even have locks. Can't they just respect each other enough to stay out of a room if they're asked too?

You must have been an only child. Invading each other's space is part of the game of having siblings. Especially the older sibling because they had to have had much cooler stuff since they were older.

Being the youngest of three I get it completely. Bested all of my older siblings but when I was 11-15 I just simply knew my older brother and sister must have secrets worth knowing

Allowing a locked room in your home is your call.

As a safety measure, I would suggest installing a separate smoke alarm in her room and that she provide to you a key in case of emergencies while she is out of the house.

If you want to think complete safety have a fire extinguisher in her room and near her room in the hallway as a precaution.

Also if she is going to lock her door at night, give thought to purchasing a collapsable ladder that would allow her to escape from the bedroom window to the ground flloor.

Yeah I am a safety nut

What's the difference between her bedroom and all the others? That she woul need a fire extinguisher, extra smoke alarm, fancy ladder. Wow, you're weird.

I am gonna go with, you don't have children or yours are young. It often times is not enough to expect that your children will just have respect for one another's things and spaces.

back to the original topic, in case anyone else has this problem and finds this thread through search...

This happened to us a couple of years ago... we called a locksmith but they were out of town. A quick fix is to use strong pliers and force the neck of the doorknob to turn. You crush it. It's brute force and ruins the doorknob, but you'll get the door open. And you probably need a new doorknob anyways since you don't have a key.
