Yeah ... I tried a lot of shots of the full moon - then learned that even though it looks spectacular, doesn't give much details when photographed. Too bright.

The photros posted earlier by Dijijay were great.

You'll need at least 200mm zoom and 15MP sensor, plus tripod with camera on delay or remote. Camera and lens must be steady.
Most important is Liveview, it is much better compare to OVF focusing. Because it allows you to choose right exposure right away.
WYSIWYG.

Why 200mm ?? Why 15MP resolution? Why remote? Shooting into the moon its like shooting into the sun. Just because you are shooting at night doesnt mean you need to use long shutter speed. Look at the EXIF of any of the moon shots and you will find your proper settings. Dont let the camera do auto setup for you because you will never have a nice photo of the moon.

Did I mention anything about auto and long exposure at all? I did not, actually.
15MP and 200mm is minimum for DSLR to get OK Moon picture.
Some P&S with superzooms or 4/3 cameras with less longer lens will take same or even better picture.
Yes, handheld is OK for quickie. I did it with the Moon as well.
But DSLR on tripod with remote and LiveView is more convinient way to control camera in the M mode.

Image

EXIF+ for you:

M mode, LiveView,
ISO: 100
Exposure: 1/125 sec
Aperture: 11.0
Focal Length: 200mm

As you probaly know, at 200mm and 1/125 you need IS (VR) or tripod and remote.

Thank you!
The EXIF:
Camera: Canon EOS 5D (35mm)
ISO: 200
Exposure: 1/250 sec
Aperture: 5.6
Focal Length: 87mm

But it was only for RAW file. I have to process it to make it looks like this.
Here is another one.
Image
Canon EOS 5D
ISO: 400
Exposure: 1/100 sec
Aperture: 8.0
Focal Length: 149mm

also processed in Lightroom.
