tempting to switch. Too bad you cannot port e-mail address like you can a phone number when you switch providers! Or can you?

It looks like this installed - you can barely see it from the street/sidewalk.

The installed showed me maximum theoretical speed to be 27/10. However I only pay for 15/1.5 so I will never have that speed :(. The nice thing is that I won't need to worry about is my usage as it is unlimited.

For the more technical people if you are interested in the peers/routes information below.

Code:

Trace complete.

From what I can tell, they peer with Cogent, Torix, and Cogeco Data Services.

If you have the cash go for it - truly unlimited bandwidth internet. Finally a alternative to Cogeco or Bell.

For those that have it, do you game or have any services like VOIP running? How do you find the latency is?

20ms is very low.....hmm..very tempting. After paying installation costs, it would take about a year for me to start seeing savings of about $20/month from Cogeco.

Do they allow you to remotely log into your dd-wrt router via ssh/vpn or host a web server using their residential service?

LOL. You'd have to be almost blind to "barely see it" from the street/sidewalk.

We switched from Bell (our only choice until recently) to Standard Broadband at our store (Miltown Computer Services) about a month ago. We are using a business package and getting 35mb download and 20 upload pretty consistantly. If you want to see a demo of it come on in to the store (751 Main St E.) and ask for me, Jeff... Great alternative, especially for those who can't get cable in industrial areas or are in the country or just want to get "away" from Bell or one of the many DSL resellers.

You're getting a magnitude more RF exposure by holding your cellphone up to your head for tens of minutes a day than you would receive from months of the SB antenna. Same applies for the whole cell tower and Wifi controversy. The rhetoric is laughable coming from anyone who uses a handheld wireless phone... cordless or cell.

If there would be any issue with the performance, would a broadband technician go to the house and troubleshoot the issue for free?

@ Mike

I have mine installed yesterday. The dish is less than a foot in diameter and it was installed on the roof. The dish needs a line of sight to the tower. Actually the modem is integrated on the dish unit. From the dish, an outdoor cat 5 (8 wire) ethernet cable was laid down.

I have asked the installer to drill a hole (from inside to outside) on a location closed to my router. This made a shorter run of the cable. But normally, they bring the cable through the "hole" where your cable, phone line, satellite coax, etc. is entering the house. However, the installer could drill a hole wherever you want the cable to enter your house.

The installer did a good work in the installation. He suggested some locations for the dish and he asked me where to run the cable going down. I'm pleased with the installation and performance of Standard Broadband.

PM me with your email addy and I could send you some pics.

Beware the "coverage map" on the SB web site.
I live roughly 1.5 km away from the Esquesing tower so I figured it was a slam dunk BUT the path is blocked by a small dense forest at Woodward & Thompson. No visual to their tower from your roof, no service :(

And despite the map showing overlapping coverage at my place by both towers, I was told that the signal from the west tower would be weak because it's too far away and I would use up a lot of bandwidth due to constant failed redundancy checking. (Shouldn't the coverage radius be smaller then ?) I understand the blockage issue... microwave is line-of-sight, but the coverage shown by the second site is misleading.

So methinks there are actually a lot of blackout areas within the "coverage map".

I was told that they're adding a third tower to the south "in a month or so" that I should be able to get into, but you know how that goes...

...Disappointed...

We have the installation set for tomorrow and will let you know how the service is once installed. Sick of using a Bell Turbo Hub for internet!! Our monthly bills are ridiculous, but we have no other option.

Any recent experiences with SB

Is the $75 cancellation fee for a specific period of contract?

I haven't read any $75 cancellation fee. The main page of their web says - No Contract.

I heard mixed reviews about SB. Two people I carpool with got SB on my referral ... LOL ... I heard about them from the forums, and then I told them about it ... both of them got it ... and now after a month, one of them got it disconnected (haven't gotten the refund yet, but he was told that he will get it). He says that the service had intermittent problems ... and the reasons he was given is like "your signal is jumping from one tower to another tower", "our tower got struck by the lightning", etc.

So, he got fed up of the excuses and called to have it disconnected, and said he was treated really badly by the guys on phone (I wouldn't call them customer service reps), as he says they have only two people that answer the phone ... the first one is tier-1 guy - John, and then tier-2 guy is Tom.

My other carpool buddy who got SB as well says his service is ok ... he says that there are intermittent issues, but he is getting used to it (used to it?) LOL. He too agrees that the customer service is not the best, but as long as he doesn't call to complain, they are nice to him.

I was planning to switch over, but after those reviews, I have decided to stay with good ol' Cogeco :) Atleast I can attest that their customer service is the best! Prices are good as well (not comparable to SB), however, comparable to the market.
