Bell upgraded me a few months ago from their "Performance" internet service to "Fibe 6" service. I always ran well under usage when under the previous service (my gb limits, etc didn't change, only the service type name) and starting immediately after the change, my usage has gone up so. Uh I'm running well over our cap.

1- what is the difference between the names. If I remember right, i was told its a faster service.

2- why would the change in type affect my usage?

I'm very confused....

Thanks for any help

Jessica

Not sure the difference between that packages, I'm with Cogeco, not Bell. The change from one package to the other should have zero impact on your usage. Perhaps the new package is much faster and another member of your household has decided this is great for doing more downloading? If someone decided to download a couple movies (or games, etc), this could dramatically impact your usage levels. Talk to other users in your home to see if maybe someone did more than usual downloading recently. If you recently got something like Netflix, this would also cause a big jump in usage. If you can't isolate anything that should impact it, then maybe give Bell a call to say this makes no sense.

First thing I did was give my teen the third degree, but he's normally pretty good. We will have the very odd month where we go slightly over, but I just noticed this has now been consistently significantly over for each of the past 5 months, and coincidence or not, it started immediately with the switch.

Odd

If you are using a wireless router, make sure that your wireless internet is secured. Somebody could be accessing your home network unknowingly. Some routers got a capability to monitor the actual usage (upload and download). If yours got this one, you could use this feature to verify the claims of your ISP.

About 6 months ago, out of nowhere, same thing happened to me.
I hadn't changed anything, but after a couple of VERY high bills, I checked my daily stats and I was at 2.3GB/day
Minimal netflix, online for work only, nothing else... 2.3GB??? EACH DAY? didn't make sense to me.
For SOME reason, Outlook starting sending and recieving in a loop, roughly 2MB every minute.
I turned outlook off for one day, usage went back down to nothing...
no changed settings, or anything. It polled the server and pulled down 2MB every minute - I'm a tech geek and I couldn't figure it out beyond that - the whole time I thought it was the ISP screwing me over (conspiracy theory) since I told them I didn't need the higher up package since I've never gone over 25GB/month.. and then is was 50-60 a few months in a row...

I never did figure out the WHY part exactly, but a repair installation of Outlook did the trick for me. Likely won't the the same for you at all, but it's hard to pinpoint unless you are measuring by appliaction and checking your usage logs yourself.
Good luck! :)
